Who at Bethesda is naming these items?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:42 pm

Just got myself a pair of "STEEL GAUNTLETS OF MAJOR SURE GRIP"

I think they hired the guy from Baldur's Gate that named the special weapons "Longsword +1" and "Axe +2"

I think the weapons just got a automated naming system, and normally the name would be Of Sure Grip but since it's got a strong enchantment it's Of Major Strong Grip, and in this case the major is just awkwardly placed in the name.

I thought this would be about the brilliant idea of naming things like potions "Minor Healing Potion", "Draught of Healing", "Philter of Healing" and then sorting them alphabetically.

No, what would be really bad would be a Tiny Staff of Dwindling Hardness.

And yeah, the names for random magic items are dependent upon (1) the enchantment and (2) the strength of the enchantment.

Yeah, Oblivion had some cool item names, but the best item randomizer was in Diablo 2.

Agreed, this is such a huge fail I can't believe they didn't fix it before release. I think the very first mod (after nvdes) addressed it. Makes me want to ditch the console and risk carpal tunnel on the PC.

but the best item randomizer was in Diablo 2.

Well, the Skyrim naming system's basically the same as Diablo 2's, just without any prefix.

<Item> of <Strength><Enchantment>

Elven Sword of Lesser Binding
Gauntlets of Major Sure Grip

 Pretty straightfoward.

edit: Oblivion's generic magic items http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Weapons#Absorb_Attribute either.

This. Also, those were generic magic items. The unique ones had names like Ashideena, Thundercracker and Famir's Blade.

They have two prefixes if you count material and quality. Like a Legendary Steel Battleaxe of Firey Souls for example. It's just that quality is in (parenthesis)

Best random items is Borderlands by far. Millions of items but easy to tell exactly what they are and what they do.

Thats a unique pre-generated item. Not randomly generated loot.

They were so much auto generated you can find a ring of peeless destruction. All that was done by hand, typo and the like XD

Would have been much better if they make a prefix/suffix system like Diablo.

Todd Howard personally names every item that people pick up. That's why they "delayed" the CK, because Todd was busy naming items. :P

The way the world is going I will be seriously unsurprised if the next generation of RPG's doesn't feature items like Staff Of WTF Dudeness.
