First I played a conjuration/destruction mage, with maxed enchanting as a sub-tree, and got to around level 45 with the ability to cast mana-free damaging spells. I learned a lot about the world along the way. Did some of the main and mages’ guild quests, though mostly I just wandered around caves and dungeons. Towards the end I was experimenting with enchanted dual-wielding with dual conjured minions, which was fun as well.
Next I leveled an archer/sniper type, and while it was a lot of fun planning out smart use of terrain and kiting, it did get to be a little easy towards level 40ish. So, I cranked it up to master, and this did help offset things a bit. While some may complain about balance I have to say, things do seem well balanced to the archetype. Yes, I 1-shot most things as a fully enchanted and legendary-geared sniper, but then logically, you really should be. An arrow to the eye socket is an arrow to the eye socket, no matter how bad a creature you are. Dragons still took 5-7 well placed shots to take down.
Currently I am playing my sword and board warrior Nord, and probably having the most fun yet. Mostly because there is a lot more action going on in mele. Don’t get me wrong, ranged is awesome, but in mele you get all the emotes, special moves, and are there in the thick of it; totally different play style. I am about level 25 right now, still just doing random quests, though I will probably check out the main quest or civil war stuff soon.
I just now got the game modded to where I like it too. That adds a ton of replay value. Plus for me, the game is so well balanced in terms of just being there, I still find myself inspired with character RP ideas when contemplating a new build. The intro sequence is the best of any ES game by far, so cinematic, and just throws you into the action. Now that I have a feel for where everything is, I can actually START playing through the main quests I have been putting off thus far.
Most of all, I feel my experience is right in line with the timeframe for release of the Construction Kit (or whatever they are calling it this time around.) Knowing how things balance, how things flow, and the general themes that play out in story and character interactions, I feel I am just about prepared to do some serious modding.
I’m still enormously thankful to have Skyrim. It has helped keep my mind from dwelling on losing my family home and grandparents, and my parents, especially my father, who mean more to me than life itself, getting to be that age as well…
It is a more positive frame of mind where, though I am still terribly lonely most days, worrying about how I’ll be able to survive a year from now, and while I still feel I have been abandoned by society after working and paying for nearly two decades, left with no healthcare or defense against biotechnology while people talk about jobs and going back to a simpler time where they ignore these challenges, at least there are some moments of peace, of calm and happiness mixed in.
