when you get further in the main quest people will start paying the dark brotherhood to try and kill you.

or once you kill Astrid. I did that, left the DB for what they were (no more killings either), and I've never encountered an assassin anymore.

Alternatively, I think destroying the Dark Brotherhood puts the kibosh on the random assassins as well. Used to be my character couldn't walk more than five feet outside a city without running across an assassin. Did the "destroy the Dark Brotherhood" quest and haven't seen one since.

Now all I have to deal with are the Thalmor death squads.

Ah yes, that too. I forgot to mention that.

Note that you actually have to destroy the dark brotherhood before it will stop sending assassins after you. Just killing Astrid won't do the trick. In fact, if you kill Astrid but don't finish off the rest of the 'hood, assassins will continue to hunt you down with notes that are signed by Astrid (!).

I love it when these guys show up to attack my high end warrior and die in one or two strokes of his mace. They act all bad like "you're going to die!" and 2 seconds later they're lying on the ground headless. It's pretty funny how pitiful they are.
