From a sociological perspective one might argue that our modern society has become disheartening, with its obsession with materialism and status and jobs over substance of the human experience, in a general abandonment of values, principles, honor, ideals, pretty much anything of any REAL value, because it's easier and feels better in the short term and most feel "ef it, I'm dying anyway."
Our society lacks strong responsibly compassionate leadership.
So, people look to a game like this which has in past installments (read: Morrowind) tapped into elements of that which is missing from such a disappointing society. Meaning, mystery, adventure, freedom, and purpose.
I can imagine it would be tough growing up in a world like this. Without a Myspace/Facebook/Twitter page to connect with the evolutionary principle of perpetual revisionism, we are forced to recognize all the technology that exists to change our world, in the hands of greedy disgusting people keeping it away from us, keeping it to themselves…
Might seem like we’re never going to evolve. So, when any flaws are found in something which reminds us there are still aspects of those better elements at work as well, people tend to take it proportionally harder than if they lived in a world where such things as imagination and creativity thrived, and defined the standards we live by.
Now, before I get your thread locked by a moderator who finds my answer too political in attempting to answer your question which is legitimate and might not be possible to answer without recognizing larger political themes that ARE influential in such markets and are so frequently censored by people who don't want to delve, go play Skyrim, and GET TO WORK!
