Why are there no floating level indicators on enemies?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 12:01 am

I keep getting enchanted items with "...upto level ##..." in the item description, but have yet to encounter any enemy with any type of indicator as to what level it is! Am I to just gauge what they "should be" by what proximity they are on the map to my starting area near Helgen? You would think that the combat system would have a more visible means of showing what you are combating. Obviously a bear is a bear, but a level 1 vs. 30 is a wide gap of potential death.

The same reason people don't have floating exclamation and question marks above their heads.

It doesn't matter, most enemies are scaled to be your level or lower anyways.

That is the real answer: it means that having such markers would look completely stupid. The health bar that you get is just about the limit for what you want to see floating around on the screen in first person, before any last immersion flies out of the window. Next people will be asking for things like radius of action etc.

Not every game needs to have a level indicator. I have good news probably after Elder Scrolls Online Elder Scrolls VI and everyone thereafter wi probably have a level indicator. More hand holding for us.

They probably do not have any level attached to their head because of level scaling.
There is examples explained above me.

I find I can get a feel of the enemy if I attack them and see how much damage they do to me and I do to them, if I cannot win I flee.

Because it's not necessary in this type of game? I can see it would be nice to know enemy levels in some hack 'n slash game (Torchlight/Diablo, etc.) but I don't think it would suit the kind of game that Skyrim is.

Next you'll be suggesting that damage numbers should appear above the enemy's head whenever they are hit. Things like this would totally destroy any hope of immersion into the game world and Skyrim is already treading a thin line with that as it is.

Lol at your second part: I also agree this game is treading a dangerous thin line on what ES game should be.

Because they have no reason to? All they tell you about your enemy is how much damage you have done to them and their name. That is actually not a whole lot. If we were to know their level we might as well also show their magica, stamina, damage, armor rating and magical protection.

In other words they don't tell us so we have to figure out some things, like how strong our opponents are, on our own.

Level scaling has become a trademark of Bethesda, the last time they ever used "individually" leveled enemies was Morrowind and they changed it because it is dull

If you open up skyrim data using Creation Kit, you can find all the stats of all the different creatures including level. From what I've seen and read, creatures do not level with you. You get new creatures when your level gets high enough. If you see a wolf at level 50, it's the same wolf that killed you back at level one. There is a stronger wolf but it is not called wolf. It is called ice wolf.

Sometimes different creatures have same names, but internally they have different names. All silver hands are called silver hands but they are just renamed bandits.

There is a lot of hand holding in this game as is especially the ever knowing compass, lol at that thing.
True but atleast you can disable the HUD/compas ( pc atleast i don t know about console)
Sky rim isn t a difficult game , it is even easy compared to the older rpg games in the series or other old pc rpg games
Just annoys me that people want pre chewed entertainment these days and not something that is a challenge and requires thought and planning to win

On console you have to turn off everything or nothing.
I agree this game is easy and in saying that no more hand holding is needed.
It annoys me when people want the game to play itself for them.
If I had it my way we would be given directions on how to get where we are going with a map and no compass like in Morrowind.

What if they knew the surrounding lands, also an all knowing compass is a bit you know far fetched.

Exactly, so just remove the enemy detector and objective/landmark marker. You still need to know which way is north

Ask a "dumb" question you get a "dumb" answer.

I go by what the look like. Their names and what weapons the are holding.

This day and age gamers are spoiled by things that really have no point.

It is unnecessary, you learn to estimate their levels by the pre- or suffix they have. For example Bandit? Level < 10. Bandit Marauder? Level 30+. Roughly.

But being a PC player i have "scanned" almost all enemy types, commands Getlevel and Getav health and damage/poison/fire/frost/electricresist come in handy ;)

But it seems that you're always a newcomer in these lands at the start of the game, so you wouldn't know the surrounding lands.

The compass markers may be a pain and far fetched, and I could do without them, but I expect if you're going to be traveling all over the province, especially off-road, you wouldn't do so without at least a compass.

Actually, you can't see enemies levels in Final Fantasy unless you use a magic/skill that reveals their properties.

Something TES could use, if you ask me. Sure as a PC player i can use console commands for that, but an in-game solution would be better.
