Why are Vampires immune to the sun?

Why are Vampires immune to the sun, but I have a spell that does sun damage to Vampires? Either they should be immune to the spell too, or they should only be able to come out after dark.

1.) By 'immune to the sun,' I think that you mean 'damaged by the sun.' Vampires are not immune to the sun, they are weakened by it to varying degrees. This is actually the traditional effect of sunlight on vampires in various RL folklores and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

2.) The way I interpret it, the spells utilise the essence of sunlight whilst concentrating it to a degree that it is able to outright injure the undead.

Yes it is. As much as it pains me to say this, the chick that wrote the Twilight series makes better Vampires than Bethesda does.

Also, why is the sun damage spell a Restoration spell? If it does damage to something it should be in the Destruction school.

Considering the flavour of the spell, I think it's better categorised as Restoration.

If the sun killed vampires it would make it very difficult to sell your items and do other daytime activities. I would be fine with more sun damage if there were more stores and services with late night hours.

I'm happy with it. Weakness (and no regen is a hell of a weakness, potentially more than minor damage over time) isn't quite as annoying to deal with in gameplay as sun damage, while being damn effective.

If you ever played OB then you know that having the sun just weaken instead of kill you is a necessary evil....i can't tell you how much i hated contracting vampirism in OB and how many times i had to reload because i got stuck in a sunny area

Bro. The sun doesn't kill traditional vampires. It weakens them

The way I see it the sunlight is actually damaging a vampire but the damage is just enough to stop their unatural regeneration

Yep, it's lame, I'm in agreement. Then again, I hate the vampirism system that skyrim and oblinlimans use, so I don't play as vampires in 'em. I like it when I get rewarded for having a snack and doing vampire things

depending on the vampire lore you follow Vampires can survive out in direct sunlight it wasn't until the silent film Nosferatu where vampires were killed by direct sunlight.

Yup if you are playing a vampire you don't want to be exploring during the day since you don't regen your hp and stamina lets not forget the debuff to hp as well.

This man speaks the truth. Seriously, look up Bram Stoker's Dracula (the most iconic of Vampires) before jumping on the "vampires don't go in sunlight unless they are that twilight abomination" rant. Vampires in old lore could move during the day, the were just very much weakened and lost access to many of their powers. Nosferatu started the whole sunlight thing. Even the paleness is just a side effect of a vampire that has not fed for some time, when well fed according to old lore they look like any other person as they retain the exact look from when they were turned. The way that old folk tales describe "finding" a vampire is the fell of uneasiness you get around such an unnatural creature an the faint smell of death/rot that accompanies them everywhere.
