Why are Werewolves even there?

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 5:13 pm

Seriously, I tried starting a Werewolve at level 8, I tried at level 38. At level 8 I was able to kill 1 enemy, at 38 I was dead before I could do anything after the change. What is the point of Werewolves? I really want to try one but the only thing they are good for is if you don't change you are immune to disease. If you change you are weaker than a rabbit.

I just hope that someone makes a mod that makes werewolves immune to all physical damamge other than silver. Because as they stand you can't even touch the perk tree unless you use the no damage cheat.

PS. I found them pointless in vanilla as they died just as quick. Only good for disease immunity. The Vampite Lord is very usefull, even without the health drain. Why wasn't the Werewolf fixed?

Quite a bit of exaggeration in this thread, either that or you are REALLY bad at playing Skyrim.

Try making enemies rag doll or use the sprint attack.

......There's a reason why mages don't do well as werewolves.

On what difficulty are you playing? On the default difficulty I have no problem killing humanoid npc-s even on higher levels. On low levels the fear howl makes all fights super easy as all enemies just run away from you. At higher levels you have to make good use of your *send enemies flying through the air* attack. Also, if you learn how to maneuver in combat - dive in for an attack and back away before they can counter you, you can finish a lot of fights without even taking any damage. Archers and spellcasters are a pain though.

EDIT: Also, you want them to be immune to anything but silver? Lol wut?

Well, the mythological vampires can be harmed by anything, but only killed by silver. As for the OP, you must not be playing it right. There's no other explanation, my werewolf characters are all stone cold killers. Even at level 81 they are destroying everything.

Odd, I know quite a few people who own entire battlefields worth of people as werewolves

IDK...

In my personal experience, Werewolves are quite powerful.

And this is coming from a longtime Vampire player. I've played almost exclusively as a Vampire since Daggerfall.

I originally made a separate character just to get the "Werewolf Mastered" Achievement, so I didn't go after any of the Totems or anything. Before joining the Companions, I leveled my character to level 20.

Once I became a Werewolf, I was honestly surprised by how lethal they can be. I started in Whiterun and went on a three city killing spree. I never once changed back into my normal Dunmer form during this rampage either. I ran along the roads, killing and eating the heart of anything that moved.

Peasants, Bandits, Necromancers, Dawnguard, Guards, Shopkeepers, random animals, all felt my claws and teeth. I blitzed through Windhelm and Riften with mind-numbing ease, rag-dolling everything that chose to stand against me (and most things that tried to run from me as well).

By the time I was done with Riften, the Achievement had long since popped up, and I was just fueling the feeding frenzy for the twisted thrill of it.

I must say that I had many an evil chuckle while slaughtering Skyrim's populace.

If the Werewolf form is giving you so much trouble, OP, I'd have to agree with the other people who have posted here in that I think you're doing something wrong.

Even never having played a Werewolf in Skyrim before, just about everything fell before my lupine fury. :D

You need more practice young pup, if you want to know the power that you could wield here's my Maul count to Transformation count.... 1523 mauls to 108 transformations.

You have to remember that you need to use " hit and run " tactics as a werewolf, you cannot plant your feet and " tank " what's in front of you not even a fully perked werewolf can handle a head on encounter. You need to keep moving and take chunks out of your prey to bleed them to death or you power swipe them to ragdoll them putting them on their back then all you have to do is keep them on their back. Standing stone selection is another factor that you need to consider, the Lord stone will grant your werewolf 50 points of armor along with a 25% magic resistance, the Lady stone will boost your health and stamina regeneration by 25%, the Atronach stone will allow for 50% spell absorption. Spells will carry over when cast before changing, potions and food will carry over when consumed before changing and even some racial abilities will carry over when used before changing.

With all my experience as a werewolf and the addition of the perk tree I am able to engage and defeat Legendary dragons while as a werewolf, it just takes practice and "know how" with your werewolf, be patient and give it another try, I would recommend making the Savage feeding perk your #1 goal as a werewolf. Once you have that perk the rest of the tree can be filled with ease.

Happy hunting.

I am a werewolf but i have never chosen to change forms (lvl 49, with a long pause in leveling), but i did the Hercine quest eariler today and the ring made me change once and i only fought once, but i one shoted 2 bandits (high level) and i wouldn never been able to catch the stag without the wolf sprint. I'm actully considering using it more.
PS. um i droped the witch heads after i cured Kodalik and they despawned, is there anyway to get them back or anouther way to cure yourself?

I don't know how to cure myself I've never tried  and I'm not sure if the Glenmor witches respawn,I don't think they do but I'm not 100% on that ( like I said, I've never tried to cure it ). The ring is cursed and will force you to change at random, anywhere, anytime so unless you want a wild card in you game play I would recommend finishing the quest connected to the ring to un-curse it, in doing this you can choose to keep the ring to allow you unlimited transformations or an armor that has a savage look to it, if you know the exploit you can have both the armor and the un-cursed ring.
Give the werewolf form a try, you may enjoy it, I recommend trying to get the Savage feeding perk as soon as possible. It makes filling the werewolf perk tree very easy not to mention a vast supply of food to heal yourself as you hunt.

to my knowledge they don't respawn. Their heads are stinking up my breezehome as we speak haha

And for the perk tree. savage perk, feeding of animals and the base perk for damage. all are a must.

if you have some low hp, specializing in archery and alchemy type character that wouldn't surprise me, but if you have a decent hp character you shouldn't have many problems. Also if there are too many people around use the roar of terror or whatever it's called and most enemies will scatter.

I would agree with these posts so far, especially with Carrots. He gives good advice. :goodjob:

My werewolf is a fully loaded Barbarian, level 54, with an almost even split of Health/Stamina (a little more heavy on the health). I find that my werewolf is quite resilient. I can push through quite a bit of damage when I feel like it, but for the most part I try to get the jump on them and rag-doll right off the bat. A kill-cam pounce usually follows up, or else I'll stand above them and tear the bandit apart before they can stand back up.

My only issue is dealing with multiple casters. Fire-mage, Frost-mage, you name it. If there's more than a pair I'm usually running in circles the whole battle, juggling

I love charging down Archers though. They try so hard, but it always ends badly for them.

OP, Werewolf is a skill just like any other. You can't try it out at lvl 8, say it's not powerful enough and then try again at lvl 38. Be like putting on light armor at 8 getting yer butt handed to you, decideing heavy armor is the way to go... then switching back to light armor at 38....you will still get yer butt handed to you.

No skill = you dead

The others gave you good advice on how to play, the way I am reading it you didn't actually "play" as a werewolf for any length of time... if so my bad and I'm sorry.

Pre-DG, many might have agreed with you. But, with the new perk tree, Werewolf form can quickly become mostly unstoppable. Just a few rampages through bandit-infested forts and you'll have the entire right side of the tree full (you should go with the right side, and fill up on the base). Remember to consume your victims. First, it's the only thing that will heal you. Second, it's the only thing that will fill your perk tree. Another poster said you can't "tank" it. That, I think, is probably your problem as that's the easiest and quickest way to get repeatedly ganked as a start-out werewolf (even by only a couple of low level enemies). If that's your play style, then maybe being a werewolf isn't for you at all.

FWIW, other posters mentioned mages being bad choice for werewolves. My wild mage/hermit disagrees. If you're throwing everything into Magicka just so you can spam spells earlier, then yeah, maybe that's true. But my char, following The Companions quest line only, has had no problem. He's no armor, bound weapons, destro, heal primarily, so Conjure and Alter advance pretty rapidly, with Destro a comfortable second and Resto lagging. Out of engagement, he practices Alch and Enchant, but ONLY with items he has found along the way, and he doesn't pick up much in the way of items, but does hunter/gather ingredients avidly. He's reached ~level 30 doing the Companions and Whiterun side quests only. The entire right side of the Werewolf perk tree is full. On level up, it's about 4:1:1 Magicka:Health:Stamina. I've had no problems running through the Silver Hand at all.

Even before Dawnguard I was killing 10-12 NPC's in one go by attacking open forts, it's all about not standing in one place for too long. You can't really " tank " it, you need to do passing blows to soften them up first and to dwindle their numbers. Focus on archers and spell casters firs, they have the longest reach and will cause major damage while keeping you at a distance. The best way to deal with archers or any ranged enemy is to use a " zig zag " pattern as you make your approach, this confuses the stupid AI making it hard to track you thus allowing you to close the gap, you can sprint while doing this as well but it requires a light touch for the turns other wise it drops you out of sprint.

Once the archers are dealt with you can turn your attention to the rest of the prey, I open with a " herding " tactic wherein I'll run circles around a group keeping them bunched up in a tight group. I will then make sharp turns into the group at random making passing swipes as I run through the group and then return to running circles, I'll continue this until one or two break away from the safety of the group trying to flee from combat. I will then hunt down the fleeing NPC's and kill them a little ways away from the group, I will continue this until the entire group has been dealt with. If your stuck in a situation where you have no choice but go toe to toe with your prey then you must power swipe like there's no tomorrow. Ragdoll the target putting them on their back and just keep them there by power swiping, you can do this with a group of NPC's but you need to be quick to land each power swipe, it helps to try and keep them close together.

As for the magic... You can perk the Alteration skill tree to gain stronger spells ( armor spells like Dragons hide ) that last longer and then there's Mage armor which strengthens the armor spells when not wearing armor. The magic resistance perk is beneficial and when combined with either the Lord stone for 25% magic resistance or the Atronach stone for 50% spell absorption which will make your werewolf around 70-80% resistant to magic, helping with those pesky spell casters. I personally like the Beserker werewolf build, in this you need to be an Orc for the racial ability Beserker rage which reduces damage taken by half and will double the damage that I deal out. This means that as a fully perked werewolf I'm doing 140 damage for each paw, with Beserker rage cast before changing that jumps to 280 damage each paw or if your a new werewolf your doing 90 damage each paw and 180 damage after Beserker rage is cast.

I agree werewolf form takes some getting used to (don't have DG yet. Still awaiting the release for PS3). The hardest part for me was adjusting to 3rd person view, as I explore in 3rd person but fight in 1st person. As a mage I never really use the form and actually cured that character to get rest bonuses again. Leveling past 50ish is tedious and all the bonuses I can get are key. My orc warrior has the form and Hircine's Ring, but I rarely ever use the form and keep it mostly for the disease immunity. I will agree that hit and run tactics are the best as the form is not really meant to be a tank. It's all about brute force and speed.

Have you gotten any of the Werewolf perks. They kick ass.

Heres a senario.
Enemies are level based right? meaning the higher the level you are, the more powerful npcs and mobs are.
Well my Wood Elf is level 81, so he is maxed out.
I change into my werewolf form, and attack Solitude (The most heavily fortified and gaurded city in the game), and completely massacre the entire gaurd, and every killable npc, with barely a scratch.

Werewolves are not weak.

I didnt see this posted by anyone else, so I thought Id share this with you, never never ever try to transform into The Wolf while engaged in battle with more than one opponent, this is Extremely important if two or more of those oponents are casters. If your lucky enough to survive the transformation time, youll be nearly dead all the same, and if your getting hit with ice bolts, you will never make it to your intended target. Wolves are smart creatures, they hunt in packs, they stalk their prey and use misdirection to confuse and catch their prey off guard. Wolves are prepared, or they die young.

Since mastering the werewolf perk tree, fighting forsworn is actually kinda funny. Briarhearts will come at you like normal. However most will use a bow to pick at you from a distance. When I ran after them they (granted were mostly the female forsworn) would scream and run away. As soon as I would turn my focus on something else they would aggro again. Nothing like chasing down a screaming forsworn gal, throwing her to the ground and ripping her to shreds...

or maybe I need to seek help haha
