Why do areas take so long to load?

Its easily double the time in fallout 3.

They don't when you first load it up. There's some sort of memory leak in which data accumulates over the course of your play time and makes loads progressively longer and longer. If not for the fact that it's there due to incompetence it's a nice way to remind you to stop playing video games as it takes several hours to get really bad.

Try clearing the cache. When the game is loading hold down both bumpers and the blue X button until you hear the music. I do this when the loads start to take longer than normal and it helps a lot.
