Why aren't spiders in Fallout

Post » Sun Jul 03, 2011 11:46 am

Title says it all. Wouldn't spiders be a nice idea for an enemy? Is it too cliched? Did they not mutate and grow giant in the lore? Does radiation not affect them, and thus they're too small to notice? I'd like some giant spiders.

Hmm. I wondered this too. There are ANTS after all.

Oh well, to late now. ;3

edit: This might fit better in the Fallout series general discussion, maybe? o3o

The ants wouldn't have been able to grow so big if there were spiders eating them.

I don't recall spiders in any of the games (but I've not completed Tactics yet).

*The wiki does not mention them at all; except as robots in Operation Anchorage.

There's several cool bugs that should be added to the game. Giant mutated spiders seem like an obvious creature to add to the game, yet in all the Fallout games there hasn't been spiders. I wonder if it's a design choice not to have them, since just about every fantasy RPG has spiders. The bug I would like to see most is an Earwig. Those bugs are creepy, and would be pretty scary as a giant mutated insect in a Fallout game.

Other cool bugs:

-Moths, imagine giant mutated moths.
-Worms/caterpillar
-Dragonflies, just might be more annoying than Cazadors.
-Bees
-Fireflies, imagine these creatures only come out during the night time hours. When attacked they use their luminous glow to release radiation, similar to the Glowing Ones ghouls.

It might be a tech limitation in 3 and vegas the engine can be pretty bad with animations so maybe they just couldn't get it to work.

If you check round the Skyrim forums thre are quite a few requests to remove spiders from Skyrim for the people with arachniphobia. That and tech limitations maybe?

There should be spiders. Mutated spiders would be awesome. :D

Mutated moths would be awesome too.
Mutated earwigs, that would be creepy, but the more mutated animals the better, lol.
Mutated Radioactive Fireflys would be awesome.
Bees I don't like so would'nt be bothered about so much. But mutated bees would be cool.

I would like to see mutated butterflys. That try and svck your blood.

There are all sorts of insects that would be awesome as mutated insects in fallout games. :)

They were eaten by the radscorpions.

That is, radscorpions fill their role.

Exactly people need to get over that.

Spiders are not only predators they still remain prey. One reason they might not appear in New Vegas is thet Cazadores ate them all, Cazadores real life counterparts eat spiders, hence the name Spider wasp.

You also probally think spiders ae pretty tough, but they are actually pretty pathetic and tend to be at the bottom of the food chain, basically a common wasp is the destruction of a spider.

I'm kind of arachnophobic so I'm cool with not seeing spiders in the game. Not that it would keep me from playing by any stretch of the imagination, I'm just alright with them not being in Fallout.

EDIT: Funny thing is I kind of like tarantulas, especially giant ones so I'm looking forward to Skyrim.

Which would be a problem with giant spiders for fallout, beyond poisonious fangs they don't have much going for them. There fairly squishy creatures that don't stand up well to an armored foe who can fight back. Unless there legs mutated into spears, I wouldn't see giant spiders as much of a threat in fallout.

Scorpions beat them too it also. Scorpions are much much much better than spiders and have more weapons and defense.

On the other hand, think of how big the spiders would get if they had been eating giant ants.

You're [censored] kidding me.

I should go there and start a post saying I have agoraphobia and demand that they design around that. :P

Meh there are other things that need to be done but it might be kinda cool to see spiders. However I am partially arachnaphobic Aswell so maybe they don't have to be as big as a death claw? Also I'd imagine they'd be pretty week.

I'm guessing it's both:

A.) Arachnaphobes. Both as customers and as developers.

B.) What is a spider known for? Spinning webs, trapping prey, and poisoning it. It'd be kind of hard to include anything involving webs from a tech standpoint, it'd also be hard to include webbing without it making the spiders too OP and a spider without webs would just be silly.

At least for NV, we know why they aren't here: Cazadors f***ed their **** up.

Hard to believe that any predators could eliminate all spiders. Nature's way of balancing things might easily have resulted in some "super" spiders that would move way up the food chain as an apex predator.

Too many varieties of spiders, too many in sheer numbers, and too many types of places that they could thrive.

I'd say it was a conscious decision to just not include spiders.

If you have an irrational fear of spiders, and that fear includes fake spiders from a game, something is seriously wrong with you.

I had a pet tarantula for 12 years. It died because I was away on a trip in the winter and my father accidently turned off the power in my room at my old house so he froze to death because his heat rock wasn''t on.

For the all the years I had that spider, it never bit me. When I was working at a pet shop as a teenager - all the tarantulas bit me....

Since my spider died, I have dreams every once in a while that he never died and he keeps trying to get out of his tank to kill me.....weird.

But I still like spiders...they are natures natural pest extermination. If you hate spiders, then you love other bugs that are annoying that a spider would otherwise eat. At my old workplace, I would actually leave the spiders alone because my office was located in the woods and if I would have killed the spiders, all the other bugs would have infested my workplace.

Nuclear bombs and huge amounts of radiation isn't exactly normal for nature, so there would be a lot of things that nature can't ifx for an extended period of time.
