Why is Bethesda the only developers continuing to make first

Post » Thu Jul 28, 2011 8:07 am

Why are there not more of them currently in development? I'm not talking about the sandbox aspect of Bethesda's games, just the first person perspective.

Well, there is STALKER 2, which is sort of like an RPG, really, there are several in development, but Skyrim is the most mainstream.

Well, the Elder Scrolls are such an iconic series... Perhaps no one else has really given it as much thought... They just make their games how they choose to, and so does Bethesda.

for some reason when other developers start creating a first-person perspective it always seems to turn into a FPS. they like to think they are creating an RPG but in reality it's nothing more than a shooter. take the witcher as an example. some would consider that a RPG but most that have played it would say it's really nothing more than a shooter with some flexibility on what skills your player has.

I would like to see more. I have played a few on the NDS and would like to see more there also.

Because RPG players like to see their characters pretty armor and throw their toys out of the pram if they cant. The majorty of TES players use first person but I can assure you there would be an uproar if third person was removed.

I can't really think of that many "first person" RPGs, outside the old traditional Wizardry/Bard's Tale style ones (where you had a party, combat was turn-based, and you moved on a map grid through maze-style dungeons.)

(Of course, if you're looking for one of those traditional style games, the Japanese seem to keep pushing out further Wizardry titles. Wizardry:Labyrinth of Lost Souls is available right now on PSN.)

You should really see all the PC images at the TES Nexus site. Most OB players these days treat the game like it's some photo opt for their virtual barbie doll rather than playing the game. Taking out 3rd person would kill the game for them.

I have absolutely no idea. Funny thing is that most 3rd person RPGs would work just as well in 1st person (with maybe a few minor changes). While I really like the ES series (mainly due to its modding potential) I would gladly play some other RPGs similar to it. But I can't stand 3rd person games and there are no (good) RPGs in 1st person other than ES.

Arkane Studios did a few. And now that they've been bought by gamesas, you never know. They're actually making a game right now called 'Dishonoured'. Don't think it's an rpg, though.

As far as the RPGs I've played over the past decades, the vast majority were either third person, or top-down. The Ultima series, the SSI Gold Box D&D games, Neverwinter, every roguelike from Rogue up through Diablo 3 (well, I guess Borderlands is the exception there), Spiderweb Software's old-style games, most JRPGs...... it's not like "first person RPG" was ever a really big demographic.

(But, like I said - maybe I just missed some of them.)

I don't know why but I think other devs should take note of the First Person Preference because it's huge. Look at Portal 2 and how well it's doing and how rabid the anticipation for Skyrim and how well FO/FNV/OBl/Mor do with a huge fanbase. I don't buy a lot of Third Person games because I love the First Person POV...I feel like I'm IN the game, not watching the game or controlling a character I'm not attached to...like playing Batman or something. So, yeah, I don't understand it. There should be more FP POV games...with the option to switch to Third when you want.

because first-person is less eye-candy: you don't get to see awesome model animations (combat, running, jumping, climbing, walking, tumbling, dodging), or the armor on your character, the effects of lighting, idle animations, your character's face (and all the other aesthetic options during character creation).

1st person also makes it more difficult to have combat moves that do damage in a wide arc (e.g. 270 degrees) because the view angle is smaller. Example: try to imagine playing God of War in first person perspective. I think I would get motion sick. Additionally, because of the restricted view angle, it is more difficult for the player to "see" enemies that are on the periphery or behind the character (without swinging the camera around wildly and getting wiplash). I imagine this makes it a difficult decision for devs to implement enemies that surround the character, since the player won't be able to see them and will just get mowed down before knowing what hit them.

1st person works for some games, and not for others. For games with more 1-on-1-at-a-time combat, 1st person probably works better. For games that have mobs of enemies, or require the player to have a wide view angle/see the entire surroundings, 3rd person perspective offers advantages.

There are other developers doing 1st person RPGs - Bioshock Infinite comes to mind, as does Arkane's "Dishonered" game.

Someday I really need to figure out how they use Photoshop to do all that soft-focus and depth-of-field stuff..... :)

edit: for the record, I play the game in 1st person (but not for any "immersion" reasons, just because the gameplay works better). Third person I save for screenshots and admiring armor.

I agree there are times when 3rd person is nice in the TES games, but I always play the majority of the time in 1st person. Just more immersive for me.

There are plenty of first person RPGs. What only Bethesda does are First Person Open World RPGs.

When playing Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3 and FNV and 80-90% of my time for all those games has been in third person. I only switch to first person for a few specific situations, like aiming at a very distant target.

The Skyrim animations from the E3 footage look much better in third person than first person, IMO, especially the combat animations.

Look at the one-handed sword swings in third person HERE: http://youtu.be/S9MBqdME14I?hd=1&t=53s

Compared to the one-handed sword swings in first person: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9MBqdME14I&feature=youtu.be&hd=1&t=1m57s

IMO the third person Skyrim animations look vastly better because you get to see the full motion of the sword's arc, etc.

Not sure about mount and blade. You can use 1st person but its really crapy in that aspect. You block your own view and there are other oddities discouraging you from using it.

bethesda is one of the few to make first person rpgs for a few reasons;
1) other ppls games will be called bethesda clones, just look at dark messiah it was called an oblivion clone and it wasnt even an rpg just had first person sword play.
2) limited to certain things in first person view specially using sword play combat, main reaon why theres no spears in skyrim.
3) as said above it just has less eye-candy when compard to 3rd person combat, just look at demons souls it has some of the best combat animations and theres no way you could pull that off in first person mode.

you havent played mount and blade have you. :) excellent fps view with tons of weapons including spears. it has arguably the best melee combat of any game.

i was watching one of those youtube videos talking about difference between console games and PC games and one of the things that was mentioned was that fps controls on consoles are very limited compared to PC controls hence the need to dumb down the AI and have aim assist on consoles. otherwise they wouldnt be able to keep up. thats why a lot of games are third person because its easier to move them around with a controller than first person view for most people. and since PCs are only 40% of the market they are going to cater to the bigger half.

personally i hate it because i cant stand most third person views. its a pain to aim with most of them and the view on some of them swings around all over the place. the only time i use third person is for some racing games and the occasional stroll the the woods in obliivon, or wasteland in fallout 3.

im actually surprised that there arent any more open world rpgs whether they are based on fantasy or Science! they seem to sell well, even two worlds 2 sold alot of copies. of course it was limited to third person only. that is one game that definitely would have been better in first person view simply because some of the combat animations especially with one handed swords looked fruity.

Some first person RPGs I can think of are Arx Fatalis, Kings Field series, VTM: Bloodlines, and System Shock 1/2.

Really? I haven't seen anyone ever play Oblivion or Morrowind soley in first person. I personally can't stand the camera angles and Oblivion's third person, but good for you.
