Why can't I get into this?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:35 am

Hi, before you read on, know this: I absolutely love Elder Scrolls games. Skyrim is no exception, I think it's definitely in my top 5 games ever. The thing I was wondering is: why can't I get into Skyrim? I don't mean the game itself but the world? In Morrowind and Oblivion I was fascinated by the Side Quests, the little random encounters you happened upon, the backstory behind Quests etc. However, in Skyrim I feel i'm just drifting through the guilds, creating a new character and drifting through the others, no real feeling behind it. Again, I will say I love Skyrim but, why can't I get involved like previous games made me?

The only problem with Skyrim, is it's too real. We play video games and TES to get away. Morrowind was a Fantasy setting. Oblivion had this problem till Shivering Isle came out.

With the realism of Skyrim, we are not getting away from the real world. We even have Moose in the game. Thing is they are way to small, but still it's like a real world with real animals, no fantasy. Not much Khajit or Argonians. Morrowind had great wild animals to take us away. Skyrim remids us of the real world.

I really wish there was more colour, and fantasy in the game.

A lot of the 'character' of the world is in its dungeons.
If you want to be immersed, find a really big dungeon and notice its 'story'.
Sometimes its overt, in the form of notes or ghosts, sometimes it is more hidden, but most dungeons have a little background to explore.
One of my favorite ones is
Spoiler
The one where you enter a bandit lar, only to find they tunneled into a Falmer dungeon and were slaughtered. After you dispatch the Falmer and head to the exit, the rest of the bandits come in. They look at the carnage, assume you did it and attack

I would have said the problem with Skyrim is the world itself is utterly shallow,it is all fair and well making a pleasing looking world but not putting anything of quality in it leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

The whole game isn't shallow. There are plenty of interesting Daedric quests and side quests. The MQ and civil war quests are good too. The guild quests are very shallow though.

I really doubt it is because it's "too realistic", just because it hampers on real looking trees, terrain, and architecture does not make a world with wizards real...infact go look at any other rpg. It takes from real life, just as much as this game does. Only exception is I think this one has better graphics.

Look, It happens to anyone who plays one too many of the same games too often, the more times you have seen the traditional "WORLD IN DISTRESS" theme the less enthusiastic you will get over it. Same thing with anything else, if you over due it it becomes "bad" or "boring". Even if you were per say go into a world with "more colour, and fantasy in the game. "(like KoA:R) You would probably get the same feeling OP.

Coming from my personal experience, my prolonged 9 week break from skyrim has almost been more healthy than bad.

Realism gets me more involved. I like it because it is Skyrim and not Morrowind. They have the proper animals according to the location of the world.

I just think there is a shortage of weapons, armor, and REAL cities. Falkreath is so useless to me... has like 2 quests that were worth going there for.

Same with dawnstar and the other small towns. It all "hey, jarl wants a dragon killed here". "But I just killed a dragon there?". "Ok well nevermind it's two dragons but the jarl didn't mention that."

I just feel like some of the quests were left a little raw... they didn't go as in depth as they should've.

Spoiler
And the the Shout that was to be the key to victory, Dragonrend, was so LAME! All it does it make the dragon have to land? That made me so mad to find out the stupid shout I've been working torwards this whole time was just as useless as the lutes are for playing music. And yeah you get call of valor but it's once a day, and if you play like I did and save the "main" quest till last than it doesn't really help you after the quest. There was just a lot of stuff left undone and I feel like they didn't take the time to explain some quests as far as the whole reaosn behind it very well. Like the giant machines in the dwarven ruins.. What in the world are those and where did they come from? See my point? lots of stuff I don't know the reason of why they exist.

Theres no big wizard walking along the road with a big staff svcking on a pipe and a big pointy hat.with a few imps fluttering around him,he's says good day or top of the morning to you lad and meanders off.

You see any argonian only bands of bandits?

Khahjit hit teams from the brotherhood?

There's too much human and mer in the game.

I think a lot of people play Skyrim to the point where it's easy to become a critic (nothing wrong with it, it happens when one plays any game too often).

I have taken a break from Skyrim. I haven't played it in a week so far. I've been playing FO3 GOTY.

A week? i haven't played in a month....

I am just to the point where the only quests I haven't done are glitched. I am not even level 81 either... I have seen all the weapons and armor the game has to offer. The only thing I haven't seen is the final destruction spells and a few other spells. But I don't care much for the underpowered use of magic anyways. I honestly get sick of hitting people with so many icy spears or incenerates and then they hit me three or four times and I'm dead.

I have strong armor and I've got a lot of health but it doesn't seem to matter... but I only dislike it because it takes me so many uses of magic compared to the enemy. I don't mind dying in a few hits by a strong spell but it needs to be a two way street. Now I do kill some people with one hit but changes from time to time.

You can't get into it due to the lacking of any creative thought by BGS.
It was made this way so people new to a fantasy setting could easily adapt and call it their own. Sadly, it's at the expense of the fans who truly wanted a deeper and more immersive story/ game.

If you want a game that wasn't made for 13yrolds, go play Fallout New Vegas. As long as somewhat dated graphics don't bug you, you'll find NV is everything a mature gamer could ask for.... And then some.

@OP The reason for that of course, is purely subjective and cannot be explained by others. I'm sure with enough reflection you could find words to explain why you are not "into" Skyrim.

You can't get into it due to the lacking of any creative thought by BGS.

Really? Where do people get off saying such nonsense, look you can say the game "didn't work" for you or that you "couldn't get into it". Those are all PERSONAL reasons why the game (Skyrim) didn't appeal to you. But to say, that Bethesda lacks "Creative Thought"?, Really? .... I'm going to say it again, REALLY?

Look, the world they crafted for Skyrim is rich with tonnes of references of games of the series, in addition to including design features and nods to several fantasy stories. Conan of Cimmeria is the most obvious, others are more subtle. Spend less time fast traveling and more time exploring and then, at least the reason for the game being hard to get into, will be categorized as it should be, a personal "subjective" reason.

I can't believe that someone could accuse Bethesda of not being "Creative". Compare Skyrim with COD. Call of Duty has successfully conned their fan base in to buying the same game like four times now? The same game with very very minimal differences, yet... Bethesda Studios lacks creative thought? Don't you think that is a bit harsh? An accusation worth reconsidering?

:goodjob:

If they weren't creative they could just have released a Morrowind-copy every two years and some fans would have been just as happy, but I would have left TES a long time ago. The fact is I liked neither Morrowind or Oblivion very much, but thanks to their CREATIVITY they managed to re-invent the mechanics enough to get me interested in Skyrim and like it very much.

Well said, i feel the exact same way... Sometimes too much realism can be a bad thing...... And in this case, Bethesda sure is heading that way................ The game needs to be more alien like Morrowind and The Shivering Isles... Right now it just feels too generic..... Oblivion was the same but The Shivering Isles saved it, i hope they add something similar to Skyrim, if not then i wont be looking forward to TESVI =s

Many dungeons have itresting stories to it

when you sneak up close you could sometimes hear the badits talking about recent events or bad htings that are happening

for me realism=immersion

the mor realistic a game is for me the better

that is why I like gta>saintsro

The machines in the dwarven ruins are from the technilogically advanced Dwemer who mysteriously disappeared some day, Bethesda isn't going to tell us why, because they have to keep some things a mystery

I say that since alot of the quests are like from Arean, go here do that, nothing is original. It's the same thing over and over again, but with less options to do so now.

In the same boat, even oblivion kept me more interested in firing up the game even before I started modding it up. Skyrim is just to basic and simple and easy. You sneeze you gain a level. Puzzles are silly, just look on the wall for the answer. You can master the game changing crafting skills fairly quickly and it doesn't matter that your combat skills are out of wack with your level you can create the gear that will compensate for that. Level 20 in previous games meant a whole lot more than level 20 in this one, and thats a fact. Theres just no earning of anything in skyrim. I know people get thrown into a tizzy when the term "dumbed down" gets thrown out there, but it darn well does apply to this one.

Hopefully Beth will reverse the trend that started with Oblivion, but i'm not optomistic.

I think another problem is, Skyrim is not made for it's fans but for the "common gamer". Simple as that.

I swear Bethesda has made me stupid now. I can't play challenging games no more.

I agree in concept, but then again, most quests in Morrowind and Oblivion were Fedex quests too. A new wrinkle in Skyrim actually, is a form of magic called the th'uum. While not radically original, since magic already exists as a game mechanic, this is a new twist in the franchise

Another new angle in Skyrim is the lack of a clear cut basic 'good vs bad' premise. A scan of the forums after release showed the anguish and thought players put into many decisions. In previous installments, it was either path A or path B. Am I good or bad. This aspect is new in Skyrim

You have to be invested emotionally to really enjoy a good quest line. The guild quests in Skyrim don't really do that. It's the downside to having a game with several shallow stories threaded together versus one in-depth story.

The thieves' guild quest line is probably the best of the major quests. It's certainly the deepest. What makes it work is the personal stake you gain in finishing it near the end. I won't go into the details, but those who have finished it probably understand.

The assassins guild quest line also does this to a much lesser degree. But I still enjoyed it. You probably affect the world most by completing this. However, it definitely needed a little more intrigue earlier on.

The companion's quest line probably wasted the most potential. The opposing faction should have either been related to Stendarr or vampirism. Or both. The other problem is that you get ushered through the quest line pretty quickly. You're supposed to stop and do random jobs, but each quest kind of nudges you onto the next.

The mage's guild is the worst of the guilds. It was a solid premise, but nothing was really developed the way I would have expected it to be for a school of magic. I think it would have been better if the quests revolved around using magic, and if you interacted with the rest of the school to a higher degree.

That is true Halthor. In Oblivion, it was really hard to be bad. I mean even doing the Darkbrotherhood quests, it was almost "justice" in what you did. So you were still being good doing bad things.

In Skyrim there is no "good" or "bad". You just do it. I made a thread about Finding a Redguard Women, wich side you choose. You don't really know who is good or bad. So you really don't know what your actions are. If you want to be "evil" did you really do an evil deed or actually help someone else for good?

I am hoping that the DLC will be more clear cut in what your choices actually do.
