Why can't we rename our weapons with smithing?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:58 am

Just wondering why you need to use an enchantment to change the names of you weapons and gear? We can change the name of our gear when we enchant it, so why not when you smith it?
I do a lot of dual wielding, and sometimes I do not want an enchantment on my weapon. It gets confusing trying to remember which legendary weapon to use.
I feel that it would defiantly add to the immersion if we could customize our weapons more

I actually thought it would be cool if you could use the Weapon designs but change the material used for it, like make a Glass Sword design with Gold Ingots instead of Malachite, which would make the blade Gold instead.
it would just be awesome :D
that would create the reason to re-name your smithed items.

To me, you are making a new item at the forge...but it is really no different than any one that you can buy. Improving it is one thing, but enchanting really changes the gear. Now, having said that, doubling the stats is definitely changing it. Maybe it would be nice, if you could do that with a Legendary item.

Still, I can live wit it the way it is. The thing I really have an issue with is not being able to name your Alchemy creations.

I would love that. I always wanted to go all out when it came to crafting my weapons. I wanted to make a gold glass sword and an ebony blades sword or something. But its no biggie.

Indeed. To make armors in certain designs from other materials would be great. Pick a design, pick a material, and BAM, there, you go.

Imagine, Daedric Armor in the shape of Glass, or Dragonbone in the shape of Dwarven...

We had an alternate smithing tree that suggested that as a perk. It was something I've been foaming at the mouth for for ages.

From lore/RP POV:
Because the iron dagger you smith is no different than the iron dagger next door. You are just smithing an iron dagger like every other blacksmiths in Skyrim do. It's just a normal weapon.

But if you enchant it, you are creating some "artifacts" or magical weapons, that's why you get the chance to rename it or not to rename it.

Wuuthrad has no enchantments, and yet is a named weapon and artifact.

From a RP point of view: I've named the weapons I carry around. I didn't the moment I got them, but after using them for a while and becoming attached to them, I gave them names I figured sounded good and would make sense for a Dovahkiin's weapons to have.

Thank you for the ideas! And yes, it would make life easier if we could rename our potions.
Also being able to change or add some material, like adding gold to a glass weapon when you forge it might make it possible.
And yes an iron dagger, is an iron dagger. But that has not stopped people from naming their vehicles, weapons or anything else that an individual might. I am sure, that sonewhere out there, some one has a pet name for their blender.
I just think it would add to the immersion of the game.
It would not be something that you would have to do, it would be your option, which I understand to be one of the, you know, the point of an RPGs?
And yes, I do agree with giving us that option for to rename our potions. As some one who uses an Xbox, with Kinect, if the can through out that in a patch, and the one with more kill cams and the pretty water, this sounds like less than a days work!!
Now if you will excuse, I need to get off the "soap box" and stop preaching

Wuuthrad has an enchantment! It is extra deadly to elves! Useful for crushing Thalmor scum!

Because a sword, is a sword, is a sword. But magical items are special, hence the naming option.

but it's not just any sword. It's my sword. The Dovahkiin's sword. Heroes weapons tend to gain a reputation magical or not.

Yep. Maybe they'll add this little feature in next time. I didnt really think about this because most of the time i suppose i only have one type of smithed weapons, i don't have many "ebony sword (legendary)" at a time.

To quote Game of Thrones, "All great swords have names". They are plenty of examples in fantasy literature and in real life where non "magical" weapons have names.
I am only asking for the option to name a weapon if I so choose. You don't want to, that is fine. You don't have to name your enchanted gear. That is all I am asking for.
I can respect that you don't believe that the option should be included, but buy your logic, an iron sword of fire, is an iron sword of fire, is an iron sword of fire."
Thank you for your comments on this!

Like the Moulds from Shivering Isles in TES Oblivion. You should be able to get a mould for a weapon shape then choose the material you put into it. Imagine an ebony suit of armor made of another metal like silver or malachite.

enchantments make them more unique. A new weapon is still an ordinary weapon

i just find it kind of strange that you are the only person in skyrim that can work a grind stone. But yes it would be a good idea to have that implemented into the game.

this.

i would probably never use it. to me it seems more sensible the way it is now, with the level indicated in parens and i give it some good name if/when i enchant it.

+
but ofc i would not complain if they did add it in.

but it's not just any sword. It's my sword.

"This is my sword. There are many like it, but this one is mine!" :hehe:

I svck at making up names, so i leave my enchanted items to have their default names too

Eh, when I first started playing every suit of armor and every weapon I enchanted for my own use had a special name.

Then I got tired of going through umpteen Fortify Enchantment potions a session just because it took me so long to type in all the damn names. :P

Now I don't even bother to change names of the stuff I enchant. Having said that, it's kind of "traditional" in my games to make a special suit of armor (usually dragon) and weapons either before or right after the final battle in the MQ. Depends on whether I want to use it to make a point to the Big Bad, or use it to commemorate my victory. Now *that* I might give a special name to, because it's likely to be the set of gear that I will use for the rest of the game.

I don"t know about that. I've made plenty of Iron Frost Daggers and there is nothing special about these magical weapons. Just an easy way to boost enchanting and make some quick septims.
