why did they remove the usefulness of guards?

Keep in mind you can still use your map to figure out the general area of stores.

True, but it was like that in previous games as well, which also had guards that gave directions.

There's an alchemy shop in Riften? In all seriousness I didn't know that...where would that be?

Ever pull up your map? First thing I would do after running around town is to pull up the local map and see if I overlooked anything.

The guard directions were never all that great to begin with. They still make plenty of comments and initiate quest with short lines about specific areas that need attention. i honestly like them much better this time.

To the person that asked about marriage - no I don't need it. I'm married in real life. Why would I want to do that to myself in a game?

I never even noticed this! It's funny now that I think about it.... they nearly doubled the dialogue from Oblivion to Skyrim. Where did it all go?

To annoying, repetitive one-liners apparently.

Have you been to the Cloud District recently? Oh! What am I saying...

I find the guards dialogue in skyrim so very annoying and useless!!! guards are pretty much useless anyway. Instead of being people to fear and stop you breaking the law (or do it sneakier) like in morrowind, they are more like town idiots, plus I find bandits harder to kill! I remember in morrowind running for my life from a single guard for a fair bit of the game and in skyrim I can kill them like an hour after starting!!! I hate skyrim guards!

There is no use for it. Guards in Oblivion only gave you directions, but you couldn't really have a conversation with them.

To those saying Oblivion's cities were significantly larger than Skyrim's - Only the Imperial City was, Skyrim's cities and OB's cities are otherwise about the same size, although OB's keeps seem a bit bigger.

Morrowind's cities were also, except for Vivec, about the same size, maybe just a little noticeably larger. Cities haven't been big since Daggerfall.

I kind of miss the atmosphere asking directions added, but to be fair, I never needed them in Oblivion and only occasionally in Morrowind, haven't missed them (Actively) at all in Skyrim. Again, Daggerfall, with all its randomly generated content, was the only TES game where I really, really needed directions.
