why does nobody use the 'help' section of the pause menu?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:08 pm

The help section of the pause menu is quite in-depth and easy to use, yet when many people are unable to figure out how to use soul gems etc... They come straight here, I feel like bethesda should have made it clearer what the help section is for, because I admit I thought it was for technical support at first.

For many people, the in-game 'Help' section is the same as the manuals we used to get with games...they never looked in it or read it.

In some ways, it destroys the whole intent of the concept 'laziness'. Not so long ago people didn't do things because it was too much trouble...but in video games people don't read manuals or go to help sections but instead log out of their game, log into a forum, register in the forum, post a question, then come back for a response.

It gives genuine sluggards like me a bad reputation and belittles the entire genre of apathy.

It's like asking for directions. Nobody does it because they think they'll figure everything out.

I've been playing TES since Morrowind came out, but never joined the forums until after I got Skyrim, and my first questions were about being able to run the game on my comp. Honestly, I didnt really have a reason for not joining. But on gaming forums, I like to think I answer more questions than I ask. With regards to manuals, I will look at them to get a feel for the basics and the controls, but I've always loved the more "lore" type info. Spells, character bios, locations, bestiaries and so on.

Apathy upheld  no need to worry.
OT, news to me also. File next to 'followers activating shrines' and the horses' sprint button as something I should have realised a long time before I actually did.

The help section in the game is just the same text that is written in the paper manual that comes with the game. It only covers the basics to get you started in the game. It's not a problem solver.

Usually Help in games is quite sparse, not this one. I have to say the Help section is quite good in this game.

And it only took me almost two months of playing the game to notice it.

It ain't sparse, but it is well hidden. And who cares about it anyway, when we have to buy our games now through Steam and do not get any printed manuals any longer? If we have to leave the game or switch into a menu to read the help, instead of having a small booklet next to the keyboard, then we can just as well go online and have a chat. You may as well drop the help and the manual from the game entirely and save even more money...

I wasn't aware of it either. But most questions people have could be answered through a simple internet search, but people INSIST on coming to the forums, typing the question, and waiting for answers. You see this a lot with places like Yahoo Answers.

I got the official game guide. No need for a manual or help file. Good idea to put the manual available any time while playing. Most other games make you back out to a home menu first.
If at all.

I didn't look for a help section for ages because I am used to modern decent games teaching you how to play as you go. . . I didn’t know what I was getting into with Bethesda... Regardless, the game would have been unplayable for me wthout the UESP Wiki...
