Why NV does not feel new to me

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 12:28 am

Hi!

I loved F3 and played it hours on hours. Multiple playthroughs never got me bored on the game - there were always new things to see and the overwhelming array of mods finetuned the game to a state unmatched by most other games.

I loved to use mods like Fook, Weapon Addons and so on an that seems to be the main thing that watered down nearly every hour I've spent with NW so far ... nothing feels new.

All the new stuff that NV offers, eg weapon mods or crafting, seems to be just a copy of the great old F3 mods. As if the games' programmers just took the best mods there were and tacked on a new map (and a, up to my state of playing through the game, quite lame main storyline).

Please relight my fire and tell me that NV gets better and better the longer I'll play it... I loved the modded F3, so I don't want to be dissapointed by NV the way I am right now. ;)

sincerly

Well at least some of the mods for Fallout 3 took their inspiration from the previous Fallouts, likes of the weapon mods/crafting.

If you played a modded Fallout 3, then NV will probably feel too familiar because it runs on the same engine. And I think the devs deserve some slack. I mean, if the game is running on the same engine, and since there was a HUGE modding community for Fallout 3, there was very little things they could do gameplay/mechanics wise that weren't done by the modding community.

The factions are well done in my opinion and many of the NCR-related misc. quests do a good job of presenting the strengths and weaknesses of the NCR, which I enjoyed.

I found the first half the main quest, up until getting to the Strip, to be a little dull. However once I started mucking about with the various groups involved in New Vegas I had a lot of fun. :)

It's my fourth playtrough, and have now really started adding mods, such as ones that make combat harder and hardcoe rates faster. Also stuff like gunswords and half-naked anime-styled armors :hubbahubba: Most require a bit (or a lot) rebalancing to not be game breakingly OP, but that's what FNVEdit is for. Remember, only the armored are vulnerable :D

Mods are what increase replayability ad infinitum for Bethesda's games for me, console users i hear have come up with interesting role playing concepts, limiting their equipment and behaviour. In fact i think the fast leveling rate is a good thing since you can ignore quests that your character would not do, but still not be punished (much) by lack of levels.

Mods are great but you don't see many quest mods or at least not good ones. So for me mods can only add so much to a game. So what if you've got new outfits, new armor, a new hairdo and even new creatures to kill in FO3 it's still "water is life!" Shooting stuff, no matter how many cool new guns you may have, is still just shooting stuff. I need a reason to shoot stuff, and all the new quests, dialogue and factions of FNV give me that.

Oblivion has tons of quest mods, many high quality ones included. For whatever reason Fallout 3 modding community never seemed to grow that big  The Cube was excellent Fallout 3 quest mod though :goodjob:

And i value the gameplay more than the storyline, i can shoot stuff just to shoot stuff, after all, i have embarrassingly high playtime record for Oblivion and Fallout 3 ^_^

Thanks for all of your answers. :)

I'll see if I can quench out some more fun out of NV...

IIRC Oscuro now works at Obsidian, so we likely have him to thank for "copying the great old mods". ;)

That's cool if something like making Mods gets you into the big business. Great work, Oscuro!

Another thing that grinds my gears about NV is that there is no 'cool' hub city (aka Megaton) near the beginning of the game.

I Think what NV is really missing is those giant mobs of enemies because there is almost nothing to shoot at that shoots back outside of quests besides Fiends. I mean we all remember places like dunwich, Vault 87, Springvale elementery , Pretty much all of inner D.C.

Yeah, after shooting dozens of Coyotes and Radscorpions, I would love to see a fight against really armed enemies.

I have to agree w/ the main quest issue. It feels like your hand is being held until you get to Novac. There just isn't much diversity in the questing or exploration. Even then, the game quests don't really open up fully until you reach Freeside and the strip. It's made subsequent playthroughs a bit tedious trying to get to Novac and beyond.
