Why does no one else use horses?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 5:46 pm

Does anyone else find it odd that the only time we see nps using horses is in the cinematic pre-game?

With all the patrols moving around skyrim (stormcloaks, imperials, thalmar) wouldnt it make sense if at least some of them used horses? It would look very cool, and it's rather odd that every main city has a stable existing simply to supply the dragonborn.

I never use horses, I find them annoying. Does any one know a way to stable a horse? I want to get rid of my horse for a while.

Horses are expensive. Or rather, they're expensive for most NPCs.

Also, the laws of the universe prevent you from swinging your weapon or casting spells while on horseback, so it would be undesirable for military patrols to use them. :P

Maybe because the horses and riders are too busy flying around the universe.

I was going to ask why we don't see something like Imperial Calvary units riding about, but then it occurred to me. It's a silly question. Calvary is kinda pointless when they can't fight from horseback.

I've come across two horses with a dead NPC next to each, they're obviously lousy riders?

All the NPC are sick of the horses getting in the way and attacking everything like I am and just leave them in the stable.

I don't think there is a way. This would be a beneficial addition.....the ability to stable your horse. It saddened me to have to kill shadowmere.

I laughed the first time I seen guards transporting a prisoner on foot, even though at the beginning we were on a horse and cart. Would be cool to see those pass buy on the road every now and then. Skyrim needs more horses for sure.

I want stable her too, she always runs at dragons and tries to kill them. I am always afraid she will die.

I'm amazed at how many posters are just responding to the topic title without reading the OP. He's talking about NPCs using horses, not player characters... Yes horses svck to use but even Oblivion had more NPCs on horseback than this game.

There are tons of missed opportunities for immersion in this game. The use of horse-drawn carts is one of them, but pretty minor compared to others (lack of unique dialogue by followers, poorly populated towns, no road traffic, etc. etc.).

Even NPCs hate the third person perspective.

NPC's don't ride horses, because they hate that they have to look at their own butts when they do. Riding horses makes you have out of body experiences in cold climates.

I have to say they don't make a particularly awesome option in this game.

They're fun to ride around but without ANY kind of horse combat, they sorta just become a liability.

That's one thing I'm actually pretty surprised they didn't flesh out more this game, especially since by now, a few other games really have.

Though to be fair, to do it right they'd probibly have to change some of the combat mechanics to allow for wide open, high speed combat.

Even games that did it cool like RDR were pretty awkward in doors. (Where you spend a lot of time in TES.)

The lack of horse combat is a weird oversight. Ugh.

I think they rather eat them, than ride them....seems to be plenty of horse meat in the markets.

I hate horses. I have bought two, and both died within the hour because they thought they could take on a Dragon or Sabre Cat. Unwise Mr Horse. They really aren't that much faster than sprinting & recharging/Whirlwind Spirit/Fast Travel.

I've seen a few NPC's riding horses, from nobles to hunters. Just have to be out on the road to find them.
