Why does Steam autostart ?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:56 am

Why does Steam autostart through the registry as soon as you start your computer? I have disabled around 15 unnecessary services, don't want another one. I have disabled the autostart of Steam also, but after you quit playing the game, it still runs in the background. As far as I know there is no information about this "autostart" when you install the game. Don't want unnecessary services running, especially since I don't play the game each day.

Not sure what to tell you.. I have it set to not boot when I turn my comp on, and it doesn't. Even if I leave it running when I shut down.

Perhaps ask this question in the http://www.gamesas.com/forum/180-pc/?

Go into the Steam settings and disable "Run Steam when my computer starts".

This is a question you obviously should post at the steam forums. But they must do it to annoy people.

That's pretty much it. By default that option is enabled. Kinda annoying, but easily fixed.

You can also disable it from the Startup tab of msconfig (Start/Msconfig/Enter). Use this if you want to check for other apps that may be turned on at startup.

Thanks, I disabled it from Revo Uninstaller Pro, Autorun Manager, I also kill it from the same place after quitting the game, just kill the process :)

IIRC according to STEAM it is done for your convenience  -- so that you do not have to wait for it to load when launching a game since it will always be running if your system is on - Plus it can't log all of your interactions and report them to Steam the next time you log in unless it is running in the background all the time - figure how much can one more process interfere with your system performance !
