Why does steel look so shiny?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:20 am

The steel armor and weapons in this game don't look like steel. They look more like they are made out of brushed stainless. Steel should be really dark and problably rusty as hell from all the exposure it has to water in the game.

Because the common thought is that all steel is shiny. Games cater to the common thought, which reinforces that idea even more.

I have seen plenty of authentic suits of armor in museums and they are pretty shiny. In medieval times servants would polish them to shine.

Well yeah I know that you can sand steel out to look like it does in the game, but as soon as you take that outside it's going to look like [censored]. Unless you have a servant who sands it down every few hours.

Because people who fought with steel took excellent care of the equipment that their lives depend upon.

LOL at the people thinking it would get rusty as soon as it got wet. Just... lol.

Dip a piece of steel in water. See what happens. I work with metal every day, as I am a TIG welder and fabricator. You have no idea what water will do to steel.

EDIT: Problably any steel who have seen that doesn't rust because of water exposure is anodized. Which is pretty common for nuts/bolts these days. However mild steel and moly that are used for fabricating are not anodized and rust will happen fast.

Not saying I want the steel in the game to look different was just curious on peoples thoughts on why it does look that way in the first place.

Anodization wouldn't have been available to armorers. Maybe in Tamriel it is, electricity being common in magic. Painting, blackening, beeswax and various kinds of oils were historically used to prevent rust on metal armor. Mail coats would get a sand bath to get rid of rust.

How about the fact that nothing suffers wear and tear in this game?

That annoys me the most. i always enjoyed fixing up my sword and armour every now and then during my adventures. But oh no, the `common` people can`t handle that, apparently.

As this is a fantasy world you kind of have to suspend all real world beliefs and just go with what the game tells you it is. You can also get glass armour and weapons, in reality these would shatter after one hit and also glass is made from sand, not malachite!

So let summarise:
In a world of dragons, werewolfs, vampires, undead, magic, enchanted weapons, trolls, mystical ice-creatures, people that runs around naked when it's -30 (celcius) degrees out and doesn't freeze, no toilets what so ever you find the abscenes of rust unrealistic?

Really??

Might've been Isaac Asimov who said "You can make people believe in impossible things, but not improbable things". People tend to notice stuff that's obviously wrong based on their sphere of experience. Either steel has the properties of steel in Tamriel too, or it wouldn't be used for armor.
(Yes, I know, dwarves aren't dwarves, ebony isn't wood and glass isn't glass. But if it looks like steel and more or less behaves like steel, then it is steel, dammit...)

where is this exactly? I want to rob the place.

anyway I think this is not really a big deal. I am sure that the denizens of skyrim take excellent care of their weapons and armor in order to prevent rusting in the like. Hell maybe mages make the metal unrustable or there are some other equally strange explanation. I think we need to remember the game developers take alot of inspiration from other fantasy like settings. Just look at LOTR the gondorian armor is spotless. Also why would anyone want to play a game with a weapon that is as rusty as hell and looks like it might fall apart on you? alot of us RPG fans enjoy asthetics.

I still hold to the truth that...

Fantasy + Reality = Believable.

Smart fantasy writers know this. If you want a fantasy to be immersive you must add some things that are from real life, especially the core things, otherwise people will not susped their disbelief.

Because it's burnished.

Besides, they had to distinguish iron and steel visually somehow.

Bucket + stool + sometimes even a book nearby! Plenty of toilets in Skyrim. No toilet paper though....unless that's what the book is for!
