Why doesn't Bethesda?

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2011 11:02 pm

I was just trolling Steam and noticed they have a ton of stuff for sale. Such as clothing, and plushies, and cups, and all kinds of kickass stuff.

Since I don't really play Valve's games much but seem to be completely enamored by Bethesda I'd like some kickass gear. So, I ask you....

Why is Bethesda's store so weak? C'mon peeps, put some cool stuff up. I'd kill for a Daedric helmet or some FO related stuff.

Sure, I have my FO3 poster and bobble head (got them both with NV so I missed out on the lunch box) and my NV cards, comic, coasters, platinum chip but it's not the same I'd like a hoodie or a mug or something.

Throw some cool stuff up on your site so us fans can buy it.

I'd buy a Vault 77 Jumpsuit and a Vault Boy puppet in a heartbeat.

Bethesda had a cafe-press store for Morrowind (which is still there actually) and a merch store for Oblivion, but they haven't done anything like this since. They haven't explained why they haven't pursued merch like this since, perhaps they felt the time commitment was too great.

It would be neat if Bethesda made some limited edition and collectible items for their games. I'd totally buy a statue of Dovakiin (I don't know how to spell that).

Ubisoft is doing the same thing with their franchises http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-8915-Ubisoft-Launches-UbiCollectibles-With-Assassin-s-Creed-Goodies-and-More.html.

But its not the same.

I really like buying swag from places that I support.

Please Bethesda, put some cool stuff up for your recent games. You already have the means and its not like people wouldn't buy things. Start small, like mugs for all your games. I'd pay $12 for a mug that has a TES emblem or a Vault Boy on it. Then if it does well start getting more things to buy. There is no reason not to. Your games are very popular and there are clearly plenty of people here willing to buy stuff.

It'd be nice to get some replies from some staffers too.

I'm all for supporting the companies I like but I won't deprive my self of goodies because the money doesn't go to the company. Plus most of the time its cheaper to not buy form the source.

I understand that however, there isn't much if any authentic merchandise out there. That I've seen anyway.

EDIT:

Ok, so you can buy the FO3 Lunchbox on Ebay for $10, but you are gonna pay with your soul in blood for shipping a whopping $33 for a grand total of $43. Not really cheaper IMO.

$33???I never spend nearly that much on anything even after adding up the base cost and shipping.

For customers outside of North America, please contact the publisher or retail store in your country for information on purchasing our games.

Fail.

They're really missing a trick here: games merchandise is an important part of other franchises (e.g. Bioware's very popular lithograph series, even if they do push their luck at times) so I've never quite figured out why Bethesda are so blasé about the whole thing. Their loss, I suppose, though I could've quite fancied a cuddly mudcrab.

Any Skyrim stuff would be bought in a heartbeat (not by me), because of all the anticipation. An 11-11-11 mug/shirt/anything with the Skyrim logo on the other side? Easy sales -.- Especially as a limited collector's item.

Because Bethesda don't have the market that Valve do. Valve are much better at marketing their products as brands, and at making their stuff go viral (The cake is a lie) than gamesas, who are a smaller company with fewer big titles and a different marketing strategy...

EDIT: And all the people on this forum are too engrossed to see the wood for the trees. Just because there's a big demand for merch on these forums doesn't mean there is in the outside world. Portal is a household name amongst my friends, so is Half Life. Oblivion is just another game and "the Elder Scrolls" is a phrase that even some of those who have played it wouldn't immediately recognise.

OMG, that happened to me at work! I was like : I love the Elder Scrolls series
- The what? never heard of...
- You know, Oblivion, Morrowind...
- I guess I heard of those, not sure...

Pfff! Then I found a guy I work with who knew TES, because I wanted to know if we'll have in store Skyrim Collector's Edition so I don't have to order it anywhere else and he replied something like he'll keep one for me and one for himself too! We were both in shock to realise someone else knew about TES.

Anyway, I would like tapestries or cloth posters like in-game (maybe smaller) or other things to decorate. And not just from recent games.

I've only met two people who had heard of TES, and oddly, both of them worked in the same place and had played Morrowind.

I've no idea where Bethesda makes all it's money, it's like seven people bought Oblivion, and four of those returned it within a week.

Yeah I'd totally buy a mug for each of the birthsigns on it if it wasn't too expensive. (6€ / mug is a good deal).
