Why no expansion discs for consoles?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 1:15 am

EDIT: Since people are confused here, let me help you out. This topic is not a complaint. This is a question. I have internet and do not care for xbox live. I have tried it and I know I don't need a gold account.

This is a long, unnecessary explanation filled with poor spelling and grammar. If you are easily bored, the title says it all.

There are people out there like me who do not care to hook their consoles up to the internet for patching and DLC. I know they are out there because I know a few of them but there seems to be a weird link between people like me and not caring to post on forums and they actually think I am weird for doing so. So nobody thinks we exist.

I really hate that if I want to get all the weapons, armors, and characters for games nowadays I have to go Live and download them. I'm not talking about expansions yet, they do this for brand new games and advertise it on the box but that's a whole other rant.

Bugs and glitches have never bothered me and have always been a part of playing video games. So I can still consider a game like Skyrim with it's floating rocks, disappearing water, and invisible horses perfect. When I buy the expansions, any major glitches will be fixed anyways and I have yet to run into anything that makes the game unplayable. (and I have pretty muched lived in this game since the minute it came out) Official expansions are the only form of dlc I care about.

I never choose pc versions because I don't care for mods and nothing is better than stretching out on my couch with a controller and playing the game on a huge screen with my surround sound. I realize you can do all this with a pc, but I already have it done with my xbox and it works fine. I am not bashing anyone who uses pc by the way. However you play is great. Your pc vs console war is silly.

So without internet I have to either buy a game twice or wait forever for a game of the year or ultimate edition (like I am doing for New Vegas)
I had xbox live at one time and I bought the official expansions for Oblivion that way. Well when I decided I didn't care for it and unhooked it, it said I needed a patch to continue playing. How the hell did it even know that? Well I could still keep playing but I could no longer go to Sheogorath's realm and any items I had gotten there were gone. So I had to buy the game of the year. I bought the expansion twice.

So after that I swore I would only wait for the game of the year edition. Until now. Skyrim was the one I was waiting for before I even knew they were making it. Nords have always been my favorite and ever since Solstheim (which I got because I bought Morrowind twice), I have been dying to visit Skyrim. I could not wait. So now, I will be buying the game twice yet again.

So besides screwing loyal fans (svckers) like me out of extra money, is there a REAL reason they can't just sell expansion discs for consoles? Last I checked you could for pcs but I don't know if they do nowadays.

So how are the crops doing on your farm? I reckon that the quarry running dry ought to have hurt the cabbages something' fierce.

Blame microsoft, they continue to put terrible restrictions on publishers trying to provide extra content for their products.

I wasn't saying that I want anyone to pay more. I actually don't know why there are no discs. If everyone had an equal chance at buying the expansion without purchasing the game twice, would that make YOU have to pay more? And if so, how? This wasn't a [censored] question either. I just don't understand.
I have already accepted that I either have to wait for Game of the Year, or buy the game twice. I am just curious why it is what it is

Maybe just stop being stupid and either:

Pay for XBL
or
Play on PC

Your problem is solved for PC as there usually are DVD versions of expansions released, or you can just have steam download and install everything for free.

Honestly the only logical reason I can find for someone to play on x360 is if they play multiplayer games and they want to play with other friends who only play on x360.

Skyrim is a single player game. You can plug in your xbox controller and play Skyrim on the PC exactly as it's played on console, except you have access to mods, community bugfixes etc. I personally switch my PC output to my LCD TV, and lay on my bed playing it with my x360 controller, it's essentially playing on x360 without all the limitations and problems that come with the console and XBL.

Fallout 3 DLC are all available on seperate discs on the Xbox (well, I'm not sure about Mothership Zeta), so maybe the same will happen for Skyrim?

But seeing as the addons are still available for sale on the website where I usually buy my games, and Fallout 3 itself hasn't been available for many a month, I have the feeling these discs don't sell very well.

Some of you need to give the OP a break, he may not have the ability to have Xbox live due to where he lives. I'm not sure if Beth will release seperate expansion disks like Fallout 3 but I'm willing to bet that their will be a GOTY edition due to how well Skyrim has been doing.

I see that. But what can we do?Even if Bethseda accept's solve his problem(obvilious other people have that problem too) would still take months/an year to realese the DlC on disc.Even if they purchased each DlC separetly like he wants, would have tons of bugs/glitches because he won't be able to purchase the patches.

a disc cost pennies to make. It retails for a hell of a lot more. I for one want a proper disc for my money complete with a decent bit of presentation to read or hang up.

The companies making the software just want to make more money and lets be honest, software isn't exactly cheap. That is why software companies have now become some of the richest folk on the planet.

If you break your console or loose you live account. If you loose you internet connection and when the console moves on and the download is not available then you are left with no back up for that hard earned cash you spent out.

The market for retro consoles and its retro games for the collectors is becoming a thing of the past. I'm not one of them but I still like to be able to see what I own knowing its there even if I emigrate, move, break my console etc etc.

So you factor all kinds of stuff breaking or going wrong into this, but you forgot to mention what happens when your CD breaks. That stuff doesn't happen with digital distribution.

I find losing my account much less likely than say... Someone breaking or losing the disc that the expansion comes on. When you buy something via XBL (or Steam on PC), it's linked to your account forever, where if you buy a hard copy, if anything happens to it, you've wasted your money.

The only way to really lose your XBL account is to either give your details away or break the XBL EULA.

You really have no idea.

Most Consoles have a detachable Hard drive so it can be swapped with a new console if the old one broke.

Also when you purchase something from the xbox Marketplace, its remembers what you have purchased, so even if you delete it from your hard drive you can download again for free.

The only thing here is if you lose you xbox account which to be honest is very very hard to do, and even if you do as long as your credit card details are recorded you can call microsoft support and get all your details with proof of ID in your credit card/ address etc etc.

You're not too bright are ya? I already said I had XBox Live and this wasn't a complaint, but a question. Also all the reasons said to use pc are things I already said I don't care about. Did you read any of this?

I have internet and had XBox Live. I didn't like it, unhooked it and it ruined my game when I did. An expansion CD (Like the one that comes with the GOTY) only gets installed once, fixes several bugs, and doesn't ruin my game if it breaks.

Hey look another person that actually didn't read my question.

I guess the answer I was looking for is that it is just too costly for them to make the extra disks even though they include them in GOTY editions?
Thank you to the few of you who actually had answers that were informative instead of just rude remarks towards my style of play. Especially Frocharocha. Though you never actually agreed with me, you saw things from everyone's point of view. People, there was nothing to agree or disagree with. It was a question with a backstory of why I wanted to know in the first place. Sorry for those I somehow angered???
Also for anyone who cares, I'm a she. :) Talasma is a female Khajiit name in either Morrowind or Oblivion. I can't remember which but I always loved the name.

He would have to live in Antarctica to not be able to get the internet. Seriously, you dont even need xbox live gold to get the expansions, or the updates, so why on earth would you disconnect from the internet on purpose? Becaus from what I read, that is what ruined your game on oblivion in the first place?

Actually having it connected ruined my game because if I never would have connected, I never would have disconnected. :)
I know people can't understand how I could possibly survive without my xbox connected to the internet but I did and I like it better than even just a silver account. I would have no need for a gold since I don't play multiplayer so people can really stop saying that over and over. Yes there was a situation that made me without internet for a while but now that I have it again and have had it for years, I really don't need it on my xbox. Buying a GOTY is better for me. Why it is shouldn't matter since it was just a question anyways.

I think people don't realize a lot of people play without hooking their xbox up to the internet. As I said before, I know a few. Hell I know a lot and after some of the responses on here, I think I know why they don't use forums. Almost every person ignored my actual question and tried to urge me to connect. Even if I did, my question is still not answered. The only decent answers I got was that expansion discs are already too expensive to make and that the disc could break, but then I thought of this:

The discs already exist. They come in GOTY and are installed separately. Why not just sell them separately also if they already make them? As for them breaking, you got to take care of the console and the game itself, and since you will only need to touch the expansion disc once, maybe twice, then it has a much smaller chance of breaking than the actual game disc. Any thoughts?

I also thinks that PC vs Console war is silly but if those controller and big screen are your reasons for console I want to let you know something. PC can be connected to TV or other devise for larger screen. Another thing is that PC version of Skyrim supports xbox 360 controller for windows.

Money. Most people are used to downloading any extra content, there's no point paying all that extra money to release it on a disc when barely anyone will buy it.

To be honest, if you're a gamer nowadays and you don't have any way of downloading this stuff, then you have to accept that you're going to miss out sometimes.
