Why do I have a bounty? Where did I get it?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:59 pm

I opened the statistic window and for the first time I saw my Level 60 Character had a bounty.

I have no idea how it happened.

In which Hold did I get it? Where do I look to see that information? Or is there an in-game game NPC I can ask?

It should tell you what bounty you have active in which hold. Under General Stats>Crimes....should be the top of the page.

Under General Statistics > Crime all it says at the top is "Total Lifetime Bounty" and right below it says "Largest Bounty". Where does it say the Hold?

One way I know is when you walk by guards they will say "Wait I know you" or something along those lines. Then just talk to them to sort it out. May take awhile but it should work.

Maybe a chicken saw you stealing something? Or commit an assault? Never trust those little buggers.
The other day, I went inside the Black-Briar manor, door unlocked, and spoke with Ingun and got her ingredient gathering quest. Close dialogue with her, and she says "You're not supposed to be here." and I got a bounty added for tresspassing, and the guards run in. Apparently they locked up for the night and forgot that I was already inside.

Chicken-related crime quote from BG2:

Enna Hendrick: Shoo! Them aren't yer chickens! Erlin! Erlin, someone's after the chickens!
Protaginist: This is between us and the chickens, Ma'am, and I'm going to ask real nicely that you stay out of it.

How large is the bounty? You might have accidently stolen an item. (or not realized taking it was stealng) like with unusual gems. Or maybe stayed in someones house at night to long.

No ... never did that quest. It's still on the list.
Ah well it was a possible explanation.

The bounty is 40.

What is that for? Is there a list of fines somewhere?

40 is about the standard bounty for minor crimes, tresspassing or an assault. So either you were caught trespassing or you hit someone in a friendly fire incident.

It could have been a Tresspass. My Sneak skill is at 100 so I don't pay much attention to exiting or entering places much. I must have been spotted.

So if I think I know where, what should I do? Can I pay it off or tell them I am the Thane?

Sure just walk up to the guard and talk to them the bounty is low enough you won't be confronted just by walking around, but the record will always remain in your crime statistics. If that town has changed Jarl's sense you got the bounty then it has already been cleared.

Its only a 40gp bounty so its not from that encounter in the DB.

I actually think that Bounty could be avoided by turning into a werewolf just before the scripted encounter. I have not tested this myself as I didn't think of it until after the quest was over.

Now I REALLY wonder where THIS bounty came from ....

I just got a bounty of 1000 from Falkreath. I have no idea where it came from. All I did was take the Carriage to Falkreath and leave town heading east to clear out a cave of animals for the Companions. Then I went back to the Companions. I didn't even stay in Falkreath.

Now, this is my return trip. As soon as I got off the carriage this time, all the guards approached me with the usual "you're in trouble" conversation choices. Thank goodness I am Thane in Falkreath and even for a 1000 bounty they let me go.

So what gave me the 1000 bounty in the first place? Is this a built in item to get you going for the Master Criminal achievement?

1000 bounty is for murder.

Thanks.

I'm still mystified as to what happened. None of the early Brotherhood quests are in Falkreath.

Who could it be .... I only kill bandits.

Well ... the worst of it I guess is that I'm on my way for the Master Criminal Achievement. Now that I know that 1000 is for murder it should be simple ... just kill one NPC in each Hold.

when you see which hold is charging you the bounty, you will be arrest there.
once you settle the fine, this information is gone, but it will added into in your total bounty

and there's no way to know what you been charged about.
most likely you killed some patrol or friendly fire.

Could also be a bug in the statistics. When doing Animal Extermination for the Companions, I got 4 trespasses. I was entering in houses to kill an animal. Each time the door was open. I killed and left without staying more than 2 minutes. How could I commit trespasses? And also about assaults.... How come that you get an assault for killing a dragon and a bear?? Stats are bugged.

Also, if you have "lifetime bounty" but no specific hold mentioned, it could be that you eliminated any witnesses to the crime. When my Stormcloak fanatic character murders wandering Imperials, the bounty registers to the hold, but when the last soldier falls to my sword, I get a message saying "Last witness killed; Bounty for _______ hold removed". At that point, the bounty is just added to my lifetime total, but the guards don't arrest me.

If it doesn't tell you which hold the bounty is in, then you killed the witness before it was reported, or the witness was killed before it got reported. Funny thing is that one time the witness was actually one the guards were after and killed. So then there is no active bounty.

Bounties only indicate the hold when they have been reported.
