Why isnt Community Discussion listed on the front page

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:27 pm

Basicly what the title says.

Why cant you access CD from the main page of the forum, why do you have to go through a games forum first?

I must admit, this has always confused me as well. I don't think there is a particular reason though

The forums here are to discuss games published by Bethesda Softworks. CD is a bonus, and it's here to supplement the communities that develop around discussing the various games. As it is a supplement to those sections it is listed in those sections, not separately.

Still though, there should at least be a link , at least at the bottom of the list.

But isn't CD amalgamated from all of the other game sections in the first place? It's essentially an off topic forum with about seven different entrances. I don't see the problem with recognising it as its own forum. Marking the place for off topic discussion more clearly is hardly going to undermine Bethesda's games...

Community Discussion is linked at the bottom of every game's main forum here. Isn't that enough? If your worry is that it doesn't have enough exposure, no matter what forum someone clicks on, they'll see the link to this board, so it's getting plenty of exposure. If your problem is with the handful of seconds more it takes to get from the main page to Community Discussion now... why? I'd understand if you visit the forum so frequently that those seconds quickly add up to minutes taken away from your total lifespan, or if your connection makes the wait even longer, but if that's the case you can simply bookmark Community Discussion and go straight there.

The front page lists the game series covered here, and in doing so the various forum sections. CD is neither a game series nor a section so it doesn't belong on the front page.

The fact that it isn't on the front page doesn't mean we don't recognize it as important, although I will point out that it isn't integral.

I get the impression there was a bit of discussion a while back about this very subject behind the scenes.

But it just seems so illogical captain. It's not that CD isn't getting enough exposure. It's not that CD isn't being appreciated. It just http://images.thetruthaboutcars.com/2008/08/what-grinds-my-gears.jpg.

That sounds a bit like I'm expecting the admins to run around after my personal wishes... maybe I am :spotted owl:

Do you have Chrome? If yes then just download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5459839/Chrome%20Extensions/BSF%20Tweaks/ExosBSFTweaks.crx and the front page will look http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5459839/Untitled-1.jpg

It is inconvenient, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who stayed active here because of the community discussion. Hell, when they took away elderscrolls.com/forums I stopped coming here so often.

I prefer to remain on Incognito. I know I'm severely hampering my Chrome experience by doing so but I can't help myself.

I thought there is a link to CD on the main page? When I click Bethesda Softworks Forums I see it right away.

I really don't like the attitude the mods give us when this subject comes up though. Many people join for the games, but eventually they stop playing them and stick around just for CD. Just rubs me the wrong when when CD is labeled as unnecessary.

We've had a bit of discussion in the mod and admin forum but it's never been a big topic. I don't think any of us are ardently against putting CD on the front, and I know several like the idea, but it would be overkill to have a link on the main page and links in every section, and the latter seems like the better option.

Personally I really like CD listed in every section, I think it helps drive home that it's here for all of the gaming communities on the forums. CD serves an important purpose and I believe it helps keep a healthy body of regulars here, but it's still a forum here for the various gaming communities and not to be a fief of its own.

You said it, people join for the games. By the time they migrate to CD to hang out here they know where it is and have either bookmarked it or are happy to go that extra click to get here. People don't join these boards for CD, or if the very very few who do then they are already aware of its existence and how to get here.

It is a bit like arguing that Skyrim should have its own link because it is the most popular forum and a new game and people don't want to have to click The Elder Scrolls first to get there.

yeah but the IP Board theme is too bright for my eyes :cold:

also, I totally think we need a link to Skyrim on the main page. Maybe even two links. :hehe:

In 2002 we were having massive problems in General Discussion, the off topic forum at the time. It was closed temporarily and then it was decided to make its closure permanent. We went about eighteen months before CD was opened and during that period OT discussion was forbidden on the forums. Community Discussion serves a very positive purpose here but it is not a necessary forum, the forums are first and foremost here to support the games and they can serve that purpose without CD.

Again, CD is a great forum but it is not necessary, it is supplemental. Supplemental can still be positive, and important, and I'd say CD is both but I don't see why it belongs on the front page. The front page is a list of game series, or forum sections if you'd rather, and CD is neither.

If the admin ever decided to split CD in to multiple forums, say add a general gaming forum or something, we would need to have an OT section and we'd probably discuss putting it on the front page. In the mean time I don't see the point, it doesn't fit the layout of the front page (a list of game series) and it's not out of one's way to go through a game section to get to CD. Direct links can also be bookmarked and I'm pretty sure there are two browser extensions out there that let you put CD on the front page (Exorince having linked to the one with the best graphics).

There was a link at the bottom of the main page pre-update. I still don't really understand why they took it out. Not a huge deal though.

True, but back then all of the forums were listed on the front page. CD was removed when the front page was changed to only list the game series/sections.

And previous to that the main page was monstrously long (a fact many people complained about even).

I actually didn't even know the CD section existed until about 1.5years after I joined....I was like  then :o then :ahhh: then finally :user: . It was completly my fault for not seeing it sooner, but I do wonder how many inadvertently overlook this forum. However, now that I know where it is I'm good for it to stay as is and not have its own forum link on the front page. Keeps our community specialized to people who love games and not just for people passing through.
