Why do merchants only sell dungeon loot?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 7:03 am

In previous games, merchants had unique items that simply couldn't be found in dungeons. Skyrim has merchants with random inventory, making shopping uninteresting because they never have anything special. I remember saving up my money for the monkeypants that a shopkeeper in Bruma had. Skyrim doesn't allow you to save up money for a special item because shop inventory changes daily, and the merchants don't have unique items anyways.

Would anyone else like to see unique items being sold again?

Indeed I would. I have so much cash on hand that I dont know what to do with it. I think having some unique items in the stores would do wonders for some character types to make them more flexible. There is also a noticable derth of unique amulets and especially rings. A few unique dual enchanment rings/amulets with one off special effects would be really nice.

Shops svck in Skyrim. At a certain point there is nothing to buy
Gold just piles up and that's it. Once every 15-20 hrs
I'll find something worth buying. It's odd how inventory resets for you but for me all my shops always have the exact same inventory. Even stuff I sold to the Riverwood trader 200 hrs ago is still there. I'm not shocked I play on the ps3 and the whole game is a ticking time bomb. I never know what bug I'll run into, what quest will be broken or when my system will crash. I still enjoy and play it though. Beyond Skyrim being pretty much unplayable for me I think it's a wonderful game and I can't put it down

What?

*whispers*
I can't tell you here ... they are watching us.

No for real now, it's for the same reason why the cities are so small or there are less meaningful choices or why there're no spears, etc.

It's odd how the OPs in all your threads end that way...
And with a single post the thread was derailed. Until now.

One of the best parts of open RPGs like this is the unique loot you can find. Hell, it doesn't even need unique meshes/textures. Just a cool enchant and a unique name.

Agreed. Cool enchantments and maybe a backstory is all they need. Sadly, only quest items get this treatment, you can't buy them in shops.

OP has the title wrong. It should have been a starwars reference.

And yes unique items for sale would be nice. Although I think the reason is they are going for grim realism and backwoods blacksmiths tends not to be secretly master enchanters. I see unique staves as more in keeping with the game world, maybe and expert level staff per magic school on each instructor in winterhold. As for weapons, an upgraded base weapon at the smith would also be helpful for those who don't take smith.

Well I think the enchanting system has a lot to do with it. It is hard to make npc carry unique items when the player has the option to make their own powerful unique items so easily. I know that in both Obivion and Daggerrfall the player could make enchanted items but you had to be affiliated and a high rank in the mages guild to do that. I don't recall messing with it in Morrowind so it probably wasn't in that system.

It was in that system and you didn't necessarily need to be a certain rank (there were a few non-faction enchanters), but you needed Grand Soul gems with either a Golden Saint or Ancient Sleeper (or one of the Tribunal) to be able to make any constant effect enchantments.

I do find some great enchanted jewelry but I also can enchant some jewelry with full enchanting perks. I am pretty much unstoppable playing on master with my enchanting skills.

As for not having any problems consider yourself very very lucky. It's also depends if you have a big save file size. Mine is 12 mb and its a mess. Never had a game run this bad ever. It's affecting around 80% of ps3 users. I do have a few friends that didn't have the problem but eventually they encountered game breaking bugs and lag. I wish I was you because this game is so good. If it was any other game I would have banned it weeks ago. Some people are just lucky I guess. I've never had to restore my ps3 but just in the last month it's been a weekly thing.

On the subject at hand I like looking for deadric items at stores. So I've only found one deadric bow but it's worth a look just see. You do not want to miss out on anything deadric, even if you don't use them its still awesome to say you got it and display it.

I love how specialized the stores were in Oblivion but now nothing is reallly special except for quest items such as daedric weapons etc. The only speccialized stores ive found are the library in the college and the drunken huntmans archery shop but even the latter one isnt that specialized.

The wizards tower add-on for Oblivion meant you could do your own enchanting without ever needing to visit or join any mages guild ever. All you had to do was buy the equipment.

There are lots of reasons why a smith might have some unique, enchanted items. Maybe one smith in the entire game could be excellent at enchanting and a couple more could have low skill. They would be able to sell some enchanted things frequently and maybe have one or two properly unique items. Other merchants could have bought enchanted items, stolen them, or had the enchanting done for them. Additionally, not all unique items need be enchanted. It would be nice to see some oddities for sale around the province.

Morrowind did this really, really well. It was exciting to walk into shops because many of them had unique things, and you never knew beforehand if this would be the case. You could often see special items on display, so being a thief could be quite rewarding (although sometimes too easy). The shops in Skyrim, by contrast, resemble the ones in Daggerfall: they sell leveled dungeon junk at best.

Do you have more than one character? On my first, the merchants offer some enchanted gear, like boots that improve sneaking and so on. On my second character, it's just generic stuff and what I sold them. In Whiterun, you can hear the harddisk working to load the list of items, when I enter the merchant's inventory, because he got most of what I traded in.

...and people wondered what was wrong with level scaling.

At least now you dont travel to the far reaches of Cyrodil...purge the nastiest lost dungeon...pick a horrible lock...and find the kind of loot you trip over in the red ring road back at the imperial city.

im starting to like Skyrim a little more!

I still haven't found my daedric boots. When I do, I'm going to maybe pee myself with excitement. Being able to just buy them would cheapen it.
