I was attacked by Powder Gangers and it appears that I got negitive Karma for opposing them. When I tried to loot their camp it said I was stealing. What gives?

They changed the moral code. If you're attacked, you can kill them and take their loot no harm no foul however, if you rob them after you kill them, be they good or bad, you'll loose karma.

Stealing is stealing reguardless of who your cool with.

Make sure you read the pop-up. If you're fighting the powder-gangers, you get negative karma *with* the powder-gangers. Makes sense; they don't like you if you're fighting against them. If this is the fight in the first town, you should notice that your standing with the town has improved.

Yes, it appears that stealing is stealing, if it doesn't belong to someone that tried to kill you.

I found that out while robbing them.

Kinda wish the karma loss notice was either different (with every little action, not the pop-ups when your relations actually change) or removed.

I didn't get any karma changes for looting their camp. I did get a popup about vilified rep with them after killing the second one. But hey, they didn't like me much to begin with, else they wouldn't have shot me on sight.

The reason for this is probably because you could be allies with the powder gang if you choose. I don't have the game with me right now, but is our Karma related to faction approval? I'm pretty sure I read that it's not. Karma is just that, karma; faction rep isn't affected by it from what I've heard so why would I lose karma from stealing from a faction that dislikes me. They are my enemy and if I steal from them it's wrong? I think this may just be laziness in the coding dept. They should have it set so that items belonging to a faction that hates you are not to affect karma. How am I supposed to be stealthy and do sneaking kills if I have to let them attack me first if I don't want negative karma for looting them??

I've noticed all stealing in negative Karma but also check your pip boy under status it will show you reputation. If you click on reputation it will toggle and it will tell you who you are good with and who you oppose as well as if you are the savior of the wasteland.

That's completely not what's going on at all. Hostile enemies are fine to attack and loot.

OP might be talking about the loot that is in one of their campers. Same thing happened to me, they attacked me on sight but inside the camper the loot was red-lit and I lost karma from taking it. I did anyway, of course.
