Why is my 2H Orc more fun than my Nord stealth archer?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 11:01 pm

I played a stealth build, Nord female archer thru lvl 43. Sorta started slowing down with Skyrim overall, but then started an Orc 2H with bow and conjuration, and suddenly Skyrim is all sunny and fn again. I'm getting a kick outta those kill cam scenes and just plowing the stormcloaks...

Why is this? I played that archer build thru 3 different oblivion campaigns and loved it.

What do you think is the reason?

Maybe the fact that with Stealth you are never seen, always get the drop on enemies and kill them in a hit provided no challenge or variation? It is extremely one dimensional and trivializes the game in its entirety. Is this a real question or are you baiting a flame war?

Variety? Faster playstyle? Stealthers are effective, but you have to play pretty deliberately, even at really high stealth levels. Sometimes it's fun to just kick the door in, shout "Y'all know what this is!", then proceed to apply the beatdown.

Real question...chill out bro, but thanks for your input.
I just want other peoples opinion on the different styles of RP I mentioned.

Yes, I think this is certainly part of it. You are spot on.

The more I think about it, the more it seems to me that my second play thru comes with the benefit of knowing what path I want to take i.e. civil war side, ignoring those trivial quest lines that my character wouldn't care about, etc...my first play thru seemed to be about doing everything, seeing everything...

Because that is the play style you enjoy. IMO the classes people have the most fun with are an extension of their personality. I play many different character types in RPG's but my first class is always a paladin and I always enjoy playing them over any other class I play. My friend always loves to play mages, and I know another who is always a archer in games. They play other classes, but if I had to pick one for them those would be it and I know they agree with me since its a subject we've covered :)

Few things more dangerous than an orc with a two handed weapon. Yesterday I was trying to kill the bandit in the stolen legion armour and he just kept getting an instant fatality on me over and over.

Laughed outload at this post but it is so true. I really enjoyed my sneak character in the beginning when he could not sneak very well because it was challenging and if he got caught, he often had to run away. But after sneak got better it reached a tipping point and then became boringly easy to run through caves one-hitting everything in sight. Since then I have started a 2H Nord warrior that is a lot of fun to play and the combat challenges and complexities of block, bash, stagger etc. that you get from 2H are IMO a lot more fun than sneaking once your sneak skill is very high and you have the perks. In the future, my sneak characters are not going to perk sneak.

Until you start 1 hit killing everything with that sword. :) It happens with every class. that is the point of TES games. You start as a lowly no body, and become a hero of legend. I guess if you were on PC you could just disable leveling and the game would always be a challenge without ever getting easy.

Because sneaking around cannot compare to just rushing in and laying down the pain with a big 2hander.

I don`t understand why you`d ask people `Why i prefer this to that?` It`s like saying I prefer chocolate to vanilla, someone please explain to me why.

It`s weird and makes no sense. How can we, on a forum, who don`t know you from adam, possibly know the answer?

It basically boils down to player preference.

I played that archer build thru 3 different oblivion campaigns.

I think this is actually the reason. You've overplayed it and now you're fiddling in the other end of the spectrum.
Change is good, it brings a whole new flavor of fun.

And This. (bolded)

From what I remember playing the few archers I did in OB it was faster paced since arrows didn't do much damage. You had to run around, backpedal and fire, or find a good vantage point and fire away a bunch of times. In Skyrim, you sneak, take a few shots, and you're done.

There is something to be said about the pace of melee in Skyrim for some players. Probably closer to OB archery than Skyrim archery. But no one knows but you. Play what you have the most fun with.

I like that as a stealthy character I actually have to notice my surroundings. Playing Rambo-lughead-style is fun as a second or third character though.

I had similar issues. My first character is a sneak archer, and while I've enjoyed countless hours playing him, I am definitely ready for an orc berserker. No other race will do for me.

Like you said maybe it's because you've done it 3 times before already. In oblivion I was heavy armour sword and board (same as I am in most rpgs) but in Skyrim I wanted to try something different and went for a ranger type.

@OP:

Because killing things up close is fun...and in Skyrim they don't vomit blood on you.

I think the OP nailed it in a later post when he mentioned that this was the second playthrough, so he could plan quests better.

My first several characters in Skyrim felt like they pretty much existed to see what was up with the various questlines. My first guy was a thief, so he did the Thieves' Guild. Then I moved on to a mage, who did the College and part of the Legion. And so on. None of these characters got very high in level, and toward the end of the questlines they were sort of rushing around just to see what would happen.

Later characters have been able to relax a bit more, and choose the questlines that match their personalities.

But yeah, it could also just be that 2-handers are the best thing ever.
