Why should I bother with staffs?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:15 pm

I'm a lvl 18 "pure" mage. I just picked up my second staff (flames; my first was frost). I've yet to use the first one, much less the second, and at 8 pounds per pop, they play hell with my inventory management. Does anybody actually use them?

They're great if you run out of magicka and are still in the middle of a firefight, especially since your skills apply in its effectiveness.

I never use em, but I heard you can give them to followers as some followers will use them. I also heard that the necromancer staves don't turn the zombies into ash piles afterwards.

You can spam a lot with staves, if you have plenty of soul gems to refill them they can be your weapon of choice as soon as you run out of magicka.

You could dual-wield them, do more damage.

Your follower may use them. Lydia is my follower and has used them, to my surprise. Strangest thing was I didn't give it to her, so no idea where she got it.

But overall, no, I don't use them. I prefer my weapons that I smith and enchant.

Conjure staves are nice for followers if you can't be bothered. I gave Lydia a conjure familiar staff and she would summon the familiar at the start of every battle. Though I did have to keep charging it when she kept bringing out the familiar to fight mudcrabs or other creatures easily handles myself.

Other than that I never really used staves. Wish you could make your own, haven't found a fireball or firebolt staff.

early to mid game they are good off hand supliment to casting, i got one early that did 20 points of shock and double that magic damage per blast, its was exp to recharge but blasted stuff as you could really spam it. my pasifist playthrough also befitted early on from the aliviation of trying to cast 3 or 4 calm spells at once by having a staff of calming, he also used a staff of healing hands. I like the staff of too magnus. Havent really got round to using the few daedric staffs in game, they maybe good.

Your skills only apply in the amount of charge cost without mods, I believe.

I keep them as a reserve. Always carry one staff in my inventory. If I run out of magicka and don't want to use my potions I simply use my staff until my magicka is regained.

i think you are correct i hoard all my gear and my starting staffs still have the same power reading, unless they are silently buffed.

No, augment element perks work too, just as if you cast the spell. For example, a flame staff goes from 8 to 10 to 12 depending on your perk.

Well I learn something new every time I come on here.

Thanks to this thread I now know that people are talking about staffs when they say stave, now I've heard of fighting staffs and magic staffs but never staves. Odd that I've not come across it before if it's an interchangeable term like mana/magic/magicka.

Think of your mage as a weapon

and your staffs the back up/supplementary weapons when your main weapon is out of ammo

I have one and it's saved my bum a couple of times in fights where my stupid followers clog up the hallway and I can't kite. >:{

Lightning staffs are excellent against dragons. Completely takes away their fire/frost breath.

I love using them. They are great for mages to give a break when you've got magicka issues and my sneaky archer that dabbles in conjuration has a pile of them for boss fights when archery isn't always enough for a room full of baddies. I have Sanguine Rose, a Chain Lightning one and a Fireball one and one for healing others that I use on my follower since this character doesn't really use magic. I have a bunch more too but those are the ones I use most often on that character. My favorite follower is Marcurio, who's a mage, and I give extras to him, and he uses them to great effect during combat.

I used them extensively with my conjuration/illusion mage. They do a great job of ranged attack while my summons and whoever i have frenzied do all the dirty work.

You need to ask YOURSELF if they are useful. If so, use them, if not, dont. No reason to make a new thread about it. You could even try reading up on the skyrim wikis about staves.

I thought they were lame in the early part of the game. In the 30s, I find myself leaning on them. First i hate conjuration, but I love staves of Atronach conjuration. Great in a pinch to have one handy. Staves do benefit from your perks, including damage.

They are great to keep up pressure on something if you run out of magicka.

I also found two deadric staves so far. Both are worth having!

The plural of staff (the magic weapon) is staves, as I understand it. Staffs is like, saying you have more than 1 staff of employees or something.

As a warrtior character I don't really have much use for them, but I always carry Sanguine Rose around with me wherever I go. It's especially useful for when I need to create a distraction for multiple enemies.
