Why is the Assault Carbine's ironsight weird?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:06 am

I know how the Assault Carbine's ironsight is going to look like but I can't show the source so I'll show my really close interpretation (with mspaint) here.

Aren't we supposed to be looking through the rear sight aperture (peephole) like this?

In-game it looks like you're just looking down at the ironsight, rather than through it. Anyways some clarification would be nice.

edited for clarity

Yeah I see what you mean im just going to guess that maybe that they didn't want the gun to take up the whole screen. I looked at some videos, but seems to works well. And I may of never noticed it if you didn't say anything. :)

Well you can actually aim just down the front post of your iron sights in some situations such as CQB for the purposes of speed (takes a while to line up the post through the peep hole), but otherwise you would use the peep hole. I too find this odd.

It's probably just because it wouldn't look very good if they did it like in CoD games. Besides, i won't even matter once you mod a scope on.

I'll explain. In the earlier builds of new vegas, they had a "semi" irons mode where the ironsights are not fully aligned. You can see this in most trailers. There was a bit of an uproar about it. JE Sawyer assured us that there would be proper ironsights in the game that would represent accurate sight pictures for the guns.

If I recall correctly, there are two modes for ironsights now. One mode is the true ironsights, where you actually use the sights to aim. For people who don't like Ironsights and can't kick the fallout 3 zoom feature, there's the semi irons. The fallout 3 style aim is gone, but if you don't like irons the semi irons just cause the gun to be centered and brought up a bit, as if it's being shouldered. The crosshair will remain, and the view will zoom in. So it will function similarly to fallout 3's zoom in feature while looking a bit cooler cosmetically.

I believe someone who went to PAX mentioned that these settings are currently in the game menu now.

Of course, I could be wrong on all this, but I do know Sawyer assured us that proper irons will be in the game.

/snipe

Yeah it was probably just the build of the game since sawyer said they'll implement proper ironsights.

I actually couldn't tell if it was true ironsights or not since the source is too blurry but the black tip did line up with the center of the screen, just not the peephole.

Plus I also wonder if all scopes will be full screen, or some partial like an ACOG.

Yes, I know, but I know I've read that there is a "true ironsights" setting.

Not exactly a source, but at least it's been mentioned.

Gnome's photos from PAX confirmed the option, they're on by default.

Just for everyone's future edification, that "peep hole" is called the rear sight aperture.

For the life of me I can't remember if you could remove the crosshairs in FO3. Can someone please let me know if it was possible and if there is any info on the ability in NV.

Whatever works works. Maybe those are actually the iron sights you'll be using in the game. Certainly better than the ones on the Trail Carbine/Cowboy Repeater.

Which just makes the whole game feel better in a melee/unarmed run, strangely enough.

I never knew I was so oddly bothered by the crosshairs before.
