So why is there no magic combat while riding on horseback?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 6:26 pm

So I just got the 1.6 update today and realized there is no magic combat on horseback. What I want to know is why? You only need to have a spell in one hand, and archery is available yet you need two...as well as being able to use a two handed weapon on horseback. So I ask again: Why be so unfair to players who play mage? I'm just saying, it would have worked just as well as the other combat. I still love the game, but I just wanted to give some feedback on the update.

Only reason I can really think of is that the surround spells or AOE spells might mess up your horse :-S

Well, if you cast Blizzard of Firestorm and your horse drops dead, I'd say that teaches you NOT to cast those spells on horses anymore. You're learning a lesson that only costs you 1000 gold.

Well, the lightning bolts and fireballs zipping over the top of your horses head might spook the poor thing and since you are now only holding on with one hand...

Yeah if you look at it realisticly it would spook the horse if you casted those. Also the aoe would harm your horse, most likely resulting in the horse throwing you off its saddle and running away in pain.

I believe either Todd or Matt said that they will look into adding it in the future, but right now it is just melee and archery.

Also, my experiences with horses dying with me on them usually ended up with me dead too. And deep fried mounts doesn't sound too pleasant to me :-P

It depends on your culinary background, but generally no...

Hell, after a bear pwned a horse I HAD JUST BOUGHT five minutes out of Riften, I decided that they were a poor investment...

Because Bethesda can't alllow destuction magic to have an advantage over melee weapons or archery. The way they designed skyrim it must be inferior to all other options.

Because Physical Damage stuff always gets the upper hand, you must have realized by now that the people at Beth either a: hate magic or b: love melee enough to comepletely overshadow magic wherever possible.

The movement and jostling of a horse interrupts your concentration for spellcasting.

The same can be said for landing shots with a bow, but with skill both should be possible. They were just lazy, is what it sounds like to me. I'm not going to complain because I'm happy they even added what we have now, so I'm thankful, but there is no excuse for not being able to use magic. At the very least, they could have just limited magic use to targetted spells, and make it so that we aren't allow to cast self-target spells. (If they find self target spells on horseback OP for whatever reason). This way we could at least deal ranged damage on horseback.

I just gave you an in-game reason for it. No need to be rude to the devs by accusing them of laziness. "I'm not going to complain." Yeah, but you'll sure insult people. :stare:

Lazy? Good god. Free updates, not just bug fixes but new stuff, and apparently it's lazy if they aren't good enough. Buy Dragon's dogma, go and pay extra for new hairstyles that are already on the disc you paid good money for, then come back and complain about BGS.

Read what I said earlier. Thats the realistic reason for it.

I laughed at that. Not that I agree, but still funny.

I think this goes to the very heart of why mounted combat wasn't included on release. There must be some issues with animations or AoE spells, as was stated. To be honest, the implementation for archery and melee is pretty rough right now as well.

True, but it's disappointing that they included melee combat and not magic. If there were mounted enemies, I would have the time of my life placing runes behind me and exploding my enemies as they pursue me.

Because in most logic mages dont ride horses while fidghting and mages need to use concentration to cast a spell...hard to do when on a horse...but it would have been nice to have it in but meh....

Does anyone know if staffs or scrolls work on horseback? If they expanded on the variety you could use this might be a temporary solution.

Scrolls take an even longer charge than regular magic, so I would assume not. Staves could be interesting though.

In an interview they said they just wanted to get the basics done, get it operating, and logically, you're more likely to get horseback archers and warriors than mages. They implied (well he was vague but he certainly seemed to) they'd add it eventually.

Well think how hard it would be to make an animation for all the different types of magic, plus you would have to concentrate, so riding a horse while doing a flames spell is like texting and driving, it won't end well. With melee weapons and bows there are only a few new animations needed but all the magic would take a while to finish and we would have people bellyaching over not having any mounted combat at all.
