Why is there only one hat in this game?

Or make it so the +5% critical chance is added after weapon multipliers, not before. Also nerf sniper rifles. 5x critical chance is ridiculous, max for any weapon should be 2.5x (like lucky, the gun is named lucky but it's not as lucky as every single sniper rifle ever made?).

Doesn't work some weapons have a less then x1 critical [many automatics]

I would have thought they'd texture the beret green when they made it the best hat in the game.

There are green ones in game, they don't give any benefits though.
Besides, they should have made it beige.

The +5% crit on the 1st. recon beret is only OP'ed if you make a 20% crit build, other than that it's not that special.

I actually like the beret and I usually just leave it on all the time (it does not at all impact your rep with CL). I don't need the Crit bonus though -- I tend to hit everything from sneak mode (and a sneak attack is *always* a critical hit regardless of clothing, Luck, or weapons). Of course, if the heat gets turned up, having the 5% bonus is nice.

If you don't want to wear the beret in every playthrough, don't.

I promise you won't die instantly if you take away that extra crit bonus.

It's even possible that you won't really notice the difference when you're back to critting 1 in 20 shots instead of 1 in 10.

You don't have to play every game to max your stats and numerical efficiency, especially if it makes you unhappy to do so. If it doesn't make you unhappy, why are you complaining about it?

Walk away from the beret, breathe the air of your newfound freedom, and step into a world you never knew could be so beautiful before.

Im complaining because I want to actually have a choice in what headgear to use. Nothing in the game rivals the 1st Recon Berets stats so why bother using anything else? There needs to be headgear that offers something more valuable than +1PER or +5 to a skill.

Not for me at least.

I am a fan of the Suave Gambler Hat myself when just wandering about in town or staying in relatively safe areas. But, I will admit, it doesn't have the badass factor with Authority Glasses that the 1st Recon Beret has. I believe that my intimidating looks cause enemies to tremble in fear.

have you seen how the suave gambler hat looks on a female character?

It becomes some weird flapper bun with a feather on top

i don't wear the 1st recon beret or other hats because it covers the character's hair and most of them look lame.

even on very hard gameplay setting, I just don't need the extra DT from a helmet and with 10 luck, nearly every hit is already a critical hit, so there is not much benefit to the 1st recon beret either.

Doesn't the hat also cause Legion hostility? I find lots of uses for rad resistance, charisma bonus, and DT, personally.

No I wear it all the time and Legion don't care only if you have boone with you I think it some sort of glitch you get 2 hats as it only happens when you take of his beret and give it back

Well the big down side is then you have a character wearing a beret. Who wears berets these days? I feel like a failed mime wearing the dang thing. I agree, we should get some reason for wearing the other hats in the game: a luck bonus with that Suave Gambler hat; +2 guns for Desperado; you know just something to make it worth our while. I love me some magic clothes in RPGs.

why?
there's headgear offering DT, headgear offering CHR, headgear offering barter, etc. it's not the games' fault you're favoring the crit bonus. in addition, the beret is a reward for a long and complex quest
so, honestly what do you expect?

You do have a choice. It's your fault if you refuse to use anything but the most uberleet stathat.

I say again: take off the beret, throw it in the river, and walk away. Seriously, try it. I promise you'll feel better. That's a Zombra guarantee.

Its not me favoring the crit bonus. +5 to a skill or +1 to Charisma (the worst stat of all) arnt anywhere near as powerful as a +5% increase in base crit chance. Also, whats long and/or complex about the One For My Baby quest? Its among the shortest quests on the game.

Thats exactly my point. There needs to be more varied headgear in the game in the way of stats.

I think the answer to that question is either "because +5 crit chance doesn't make a difference for my character one way or another," or "because that's not what I want my character to look like."

I agree that the Beret looked super overpowered first time I got it. I saw that bonus and realized that in my first playthrough, I would be planning my whole outfit around that Beret for the rest of the game. My second playthrough, though, I actually know what I'm doing enough that +5 crit chance really doesn't affect how much effort it takes to kill an enemy. I like that character's haircut more than I like a stat bonus that ends up not making a huge difference. Characters with a focus on Explosives or Sneak don't benefit from the hat at all.

I'm trying to help you, dude. You're just not listening. I'm going to try one more time and then give up.

The problem is that deep in the id you have a voice saying "GOTTA MAX DPS GOTTA MAX DPS GOTTA MAX DPS GOTTA MAX DPS GOTTA MAX DPS". Yet somewhere up in the ego you also have a voice saying, "I'm sick of wearing this [censored] beret." All I'm trying to do is help you realize that that first voice is an idiot. You've gone your entire gaming life without questioning him or even realizing he's there, but he's dumb and you should start listening to the second voice instead.

Fallout isn't a game where the goal is to max dps, unless that's what you really really want. If it's what you really really want, then congratulations, you won the game because you found the beret. You can stop playing now. But look at the box. It doesn't say "Fallout: the game where you can really max your dps!" The reviews don't say, "I had a great time finding the sweetest gear and one-shotting everything in the world!" You love dps, that's obvious. I'm just suggesting that there are other things you can play this game for. Is the game really so hard that you can't survive the combats without that beret?

I'm not asking you to "ignore" anything in the game. I'm suggesting that you let go of your slavish impulse to pursue max damage, because you yourself don't like it! If you did like it, you wouldn't have made this thread in the first place. You reached out, and you're trying to free yourself from slavery to that stupid voice. Are you strong enough to make your own decisions? Are you too scared to let go of that awesome 5%?

I am TOTALLY SERIOUS when I say to TRY IT. Throw away the beret and play without it. You can keep a saved game if you're too terrified to let it go forever. But serious. You don't have to wear it. Man up and give it a shot. Or are you too much of a chicken? Brawwwk bock bock bock bock

Yea I said it. There are absolutely no practical reasons to use any hat other than the 1st Recon Beret. This is easily the single best headgear on the game and not only that but its leagues ahead of anything else. Most hats either give +1PER or nothing at all. There are a few rare-ish ones that give +5 to something like Barter, Explosives, etc but they still dont compete with a +5% crit chance.

+5% crit is HUGE in this game. Please add some headgear with better stats so that ill want to use something other than the 1st Recon Beret on every character ill ever make.

While I understand what you are saying, personally, I like the look of the campaign hat that the rangers wear. It doesn't even give you anything to perspective, but as someone else said; as long as I look good, I'm ok with that.

the combat is so laughably easy even on the hardest setting that one can justify such an attitude

good thing this isnt an mmorpg, we'd have hundreds of threads saying "OMFG NERF RECON BERETS!" :D

Seeing the way things go, months (years) after the release of Fallout3 and Oblivion, there are a million-and-one different hats and shields and outfits etc. available from modders.
Pages and pages of simple little mods that add these items - while plowing through them all searching for quest-mods, which are few & far between...
So any rookie with the G.E.C.K. could make a new hat anyway... no big deal.
Personally I have been known to wear sixy Sleepwear (Speech +10, Luck +1) with the Trader Hat (Barter +5) 'in public' heheh...
Like talking with NCR Generals, Legion Legates etc...
So it's all kinda phoney - you never hear comments from those you're dealing with, about your wardrobe LoL (when maybe you should be).
Maybe they should have attached that beret to Boone more strongly - ie. no Boone, no beret.
But then who would travel with Raul (for example)?
Nobody. (I dropped his complaining butt pretty quickly - didn't even know he had a quest!)
Wearing that specific beret should maybe give something of benefit only to a Sniper...
I mean, the crit bonus works even if you're wielding the SuperSledge or Chainsaw, right?
So it is maybe a little unbalanced, I'll agree!
What I don't understand is why I will never wear a Power Armor helm... I dunno, just don't like to.
Maybe somebody should buff those up just a tiny bit...?

Personally, I wear the top hat I get off of Mortimer at the Ultra Lux. I just like the style. In Fallout 3, I wore Lincoln's hat - same style but with a very usefull +5 to speech.
