Why whine about Magic?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:01 am

Why do I constantly see people whining about the lack of spell-crafting and magical spells in Skyrim? Do y'all realize that Skyrim is a province that is not really a magic user's paradise? Is it just me or are the native people to Skyrim are either scared and/or completely against magic? It would make sense that magic doesn't have the foothold that it would in other provinces, maybe that's just my perception though.

there is an freaking college devoted to magic.

Edit: also everytime you go for a walk in the woods you seem to run into a fire and ice mage fighting and necromancers around every corner.

There's a college a few miles from me devoted to Merchant Seaman training but that doesn't mean everyone in the UK is a Merchant Sailor.

Your point? You are right that there is a college but that doesn't mean that it has the magical foothold it needs to draw in the highest magical beings in all of Tamriel. Therefore teaching the higher and harder spells seems unlikely. Does that mean that there is no magic? Nope. But I think Skyrim is just right in the fact that the province itself is more of a hack and slash, slightly less sophisticated province.

The College is clearly respected outside of Skyrim, and has writings dating back to the Second Era. Moreover, you actually go on a quest to help a teacher MAKE a spell for the first time, so it's very clear that at least some of the faculty is skilled enough in the art to actually perform it, and possibly teach it.

Arinbjorn doesn't whine about magic...it's his enemies who whine, as soon as he suddenly dissapears in front of them, then appears behind them and knock them off :)

It has only really been respected since becoming home to the Ysmir Collective. Before that it was some rinky-dink private college that offered very little in the way of learning.

It's simple. Bethesda included magic in the game, one third of the perk trees are devoted to magic schools, yet magic loses in comparasion to stealth and warrior skills, and worse, proves to be inefficient for dealing with high level enemies. Therefore complaining from magic users.

If they wanted make Skyrim magic free, they shouldn't have included it.

Though just imagine this forum if they had done that... :bolt:

The player isn't an average Skyrim citizen, though, and you have the option to do many other exceptional things that most people wouldn't understand or approve of, such as crafting Daedric armor. I'm not feeling that magic is weak so far, although I haven't gotten to really high levels yet, but I don't think it would be a good design decision to limit one of the three main playstyles that all the games share because it's not the focus of the setting (would they cut back on the amount of weapons and armor in Summerset Isle because its a magic-heavy province?). I don't expect the developers would do that intentionally, and would want all three to be as good as they can be.

Players whine about magic because they feel it is an aspect in the game that has been under developed. I mean have you seen the master level destruction spells, those things are a JOKE. If you had played any of the other ES games, you would probably know that magic has been the red headed step child, at least since morrowind (no regen + spell failure + half the enemies have constant spell reflect = lol mages). There was no legit reason to remove spell crafting at all, or at least none that I can fathom. I at least know it wasn't to prevent any exploits, as the current enchanting/smithing/alchemy system laughs at that.

Really though, its about character customization. The fact that you could create your own spell and put your very own special touch on it was just a fun aspect of past ES games. If you wanted to use your magicka very effeciently, you could create an on touch spell with a low magnitude, but long duration. If you wanted your enemy dead now, you could make a spell to use ALL your magick at once for one big attack, but you would be vulnerable afterwards, Maybe your mage really likes the basic "Flames" spell, and would have prefered using it through out the game. With spell crafting, you could at least upgrade the damage of the spell eventually, keeping your favorite spells "up to date".

At least on the PC you have mods to fix some of the problems, but on console...I feel nothing but pity for.

1st off, it isn't whining. Whining is what people who complain about complainers do.

The COMPLAINT about the lack of spell makiing and magical spells is because magic is SUPPOSED to be part of the TES universe. Without spell making the mage is pretty useless because all you have are stock spells. How can you role play a mage without the ability to create your own spell that is specific to your mage?
