Why do you die from lack of sleep?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:40 pm

I never thought of this before. I guess just playing New Vegas I was so eager that I missed this. Usually I see these things. I was talking to someone about this and that's when I realized why do we not pass out when we are tired? Why do we die? Wouldn't it be better to have like half vision or slow down or whatever when reaching 500, and at 1000 we pass out. So if we pass out, we are basically helpless to do anything.

So don't you think it's better instead of having stat reduction is to have different effects? Basically H20, Rads, Food and Sleep are all the same. When at 1000 you die. Do you think this could have been better implemented?

Well if you pass out in the middle of the desert, it's assumed that you'd die anyway, either by exposure or by something not nice. I think they're just cutting out the middle man.

Just pretend someone comes along and stabs you while you're passed out in a dangerous location.

The sleep system is pretty unrealistic given how slowly it becomes a problem and how little sleep you need to fix it. But then the same is true, to a lesser extent, when it comes to the food and water requirements.

I like the effects you describe but I don't thing it's necessary a problem having sleep follow the same mechanic as food and water.

Well if I remember correctly there was a case of someone playing a MMO for purportidly around 60 hours straight which apparently proved to be fatal for them.

You actually die of exhaustion in RL if you don't sleep for some time.

Yea hardcoe basically just gave a you a few minor annoyances to watch, the only thing that made it more difficult was that you could not heal limbs with stimpaks.

I've been awake for like 64 hours straight before. I didn't feel tired at all though. Also i didn't die or go crazy.

If you don't sleep you cannot dream, when you dream your brain enters a state known as REM sleep, or Rapid Eye Movement, at this time your brain rests and this is what keeps you sane, because your brain needs to rest if you brain doesn't get any REM sleep for long enough you will go mad, madness has a habit of lacking self preservation which includes not recognising the need to eat or drink, doing dangerous things without concern for your own safety, hallucinating, paranoia etc.

However....there is also a point where you will just pass out through exhaustion so staying away is pretty difficult to do unaided.

Personaly I think it would be awesome if slowly you started seeing things that were not there, for example you would see a deathclaw as a friendly npc or you would lose track of your health meter because it goes invisible, your companion would turn into a giant cartoon vault boy. Or your actual faction rep would appear to change so that if Cesars legion hated you they would show up friendly and if NCR likes you they show up as hostile totally screwing with your perception of what is right and wrong. It would never happen because too many people would complain about it but it would be a way of getting your crazy on.

I'm not certain, but I'll take a guess that Sleep and fatigue are related, and passing out in [usually] hostile territory, and /or combat == death. So the game ends. A mod maybe could intercept, and force a "sleep/wait" of X number of hours, and heal you that much ~A snazzy mod could additionally roll % chance of not being found each hour (of 8), and spawn something if you were found, or do nothing if you were not found.

I shall now wait for a mod. Thats exactly what it should have been.

  Agreed.

*But what if, when you have the "mad / hokerr" perk, this puts you into a new faction? The "helpless nitwit" faction where others may choose sympathy (for charitable or exploitative reasons).
Imagine a hostile Caesar seeing your stupor and sending you out to fetch a loaded Fatman launcher that is sticking ? out of a radioactive pool
(that maybe doesn't register as radioactive until you've slept ); or gives you a teddy bear for the NCR that has C4 in its belly.

Come to think of it... In a STAT based FPP game, the PC's intelligence and perception should have an effect on what the PC notices and understands... Meaning the dunce PC doesn't even know what the Geiger counter is or does, and/ or have selected aspects of the HUD and Pipboy not appear, or not noticeably work or do anything helpful, unless the PC has the minimum stats to make use of it.

Thats impossible. Maximum time a person can handle being awake is about 35 hours. I study biology trust me. Sorry for my bad english ...

Also I study medicine and once I worked for 54 hours non-stop, and it was 57 hours till I got to sleep... I did not have delusions or any pain but became euphoric, laughing at any word I hear. But I don't recommend it to anyone.

Of course... But the article states their maximum limit by policy, and the post that I quoted stated that its impossible to be awake for 64 hours. (citing biological reasons)

(Though he did say, "Maximum time a person can handle being awake..." and that could change the intent.)

The topic is death by deprivation.

Study harder.

I suffer from chronic insomnia and have also had the unpleasant experience of being awake almost 3 days straight before I slept... when I finally did go to sleep I slept for I think roughly 15 hours. In terms of "symptoms", I continuously thought I'd see things moving out of the corners of my eyes and often I wasn't aware of what was going on around me (tunnel vision).

That's how it was for me... but it was not insomnia, and I was awake for only just more than a day and a half (not quite two).
