It's there for legal reasons, I think. Sure it won't stop people from lying, but it does provide some level of legal protection.

Legal reasons.

Sites for M rated games may contain trailers/ect. for said game,game companies would get sued constantly if they didn't do that.

Its just a technicality so they can't get in legal trouble.Anyone with half a brain cell can work their way around an age gate though.
