Wild Card : Fallout: New Vegas

DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANY SPOILERS! You may be at different parts of the game than I

As a player who likes to watch what I'm doing on my first playthrough to avoid doing all of the things in the game on 1 character im finding it difficult to follow some of the quest chains taking place. This is most lethal in places like The Strip and the Wildcard quests, so here are a few basic questions, please avoid giving me the ultimate path or plot points involved, im just looking for the basics.

My first character usually explores a bit, takes perks like Animal Friend to avoid killing too many critters, is Int, End and Str stacked with Guns, Explosives,Survival and Science as my skills that im putting points into, and is a all around good guy.

Spoiler

1) Am i right to assume that the Wild Card! quest lines are just alternate paths to dealing with the MQ and the ultimate fate of Vegas, and you are meant to choose only one of these paths in lieu of retrieving the platinum chip for Mr.House?

2) I'm trying to align myself with the NCR, does helping Mr.House alter this plan?

3) How neccesary is the speech skill to dealing with things w/o causing a lot of damage to multiple factions im trying to be nice with?

4) How far along am i in the MQ line of NV, just was duped by Benny at the Tops and am about to report to Mr.House, compare this point in the MQ to how Fallout 3's quest line progressed.

5)Is the Hoover Dam, NCR v Legion quest line share the MQ tag with the Mr.House dealings?

Figured i would post here instead of editing so it doesnt get lost in the text above,

I was level 9 when i entered the strip and had really spent most of my time exploring, only did 3 Side-quests and hardly and unmarked stuff, then did the Kings quests to enter the strip and started some other Freeside stuff. Its almost as if The Strip is where the meat of the game truly begins to take hold as i havent ventured much off the main road.
