Does anyone know what the word is with us being able to edit meshes? is it coming anytime soon?

It's been done. NIFSkope now works with Skyrim meshes.
For in-depth editing w/ other programs and getting them ingame, you might want to search on Skyrim Nexus' Mod Talk forums.
