No will of moving on

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:08 pm

My only character (Level 28 Sword & Shield Warrior with 90 Log Hours) now has no will of moving on in the Main Quest line. Some time ago, I completed The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller and with the way Delphine acted and said things to my face, I didn't like her and so refused to cooperate with her by saying "I don't have time for this". Another reason was that I found a book called "The Rise and Fall of The Blades" in her room which I brought home to read, it says The Blades are suppose to protect and serve me, like my Housecarls who would never turn on me. So I went back to Riverwood, and tested her by showing her my true and only Dovahkiin's trademark Fus-Ro-Dah and this B turned on me! Many times have I sheathed my weapons telling her it's over, let's put the past bahind us, but she wouldn't stop! This woman is just nuts, so I left her for good. Then I found out there are no more Dragons! So my character is really just living the happy life helping out towns people while accumulating wealth. And I found myself having no intention of moving on in the Main Quest line any further, my understanding is after talking to Delphine and associating myself with her, things will only get worst and Dragons will start coming back with no way to reverse it. So I got to thinking what is the point of talking to her now? Dragons have already stopped terrorizing towns, I'm already accepted by The Greybeards, my character is so popular being granted Thanes for so many cities, everything is as good as it can be! I'm not sure if the stage I'm in right now is intended by the developers? It already seems like the quest has ended for me and I'm just living the good life reserved for Heroes after their quests have been completed.

Did this happen to you?
What benefits are there for moving on any further?

Um. Try not to let the perception of what "should" be get in the way of what IS now in this game. No one's going to be your protector or servant. If you want to finish the MQ, load up a save before you tried to blow Delphine to kingdom come.

The dragons stop because...

Spoiler
in that part of the main quest, you're supposed to go with Delphine to Kynesgrove, where a scripted dragon attack takes place, where you are supposed to absorb the Dragon Soul and then Delphine will believe you're really the Dragonborn. Dragons are turned off because if Delphine saw you fight a dragon and absorb its soul on the way, the scripted sequence wouldn't make sense.

The cool thing about these TES games is that any choice works. The main quest doesn't need to happen.

Thanks for this explanation. I was getting tired of random dragon attacks at crucial points while doing side quests. No I know I can take a break from them until I'm ready to continue with the MQ.

This is actually very helpful, since there are a few quests involved around whiterun, only after completing "dragon rising". And some people don't want the dragons in their game :D

Right. So, right after you get the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller from Delphine, and the quest "A Blade in the Dark" starts, if you tell Delphine you don't have to prove anything to her and tell her to stick it you-know-where, you shouldn't see any more dragons until you decide to continue.

PC users, though, can turn dragons off at any time by opening the console and typing "set mq106turnoffrandomdragons to 1" which basically tells the game you're doing that quest and to turn off the dragons.

What's gonna happen to our Quest Log when we type that? Is there any repercussions for turning it on and off via that method?

None. It only changes a global variable, it doesn't touch any quests. Basically, it's a flag. When you're doing MQ106 (A Blade in the Dark) it turns itself on and says "Hey! No dragons right now!" and when the quest is over it turns itself back off. Well, provided it doesn't bug, anyway. All you're doing is turning the flag back on, tricking the game into thinking you're doing a quest when you aren't. It doesn't put the quest back in your log or screw anything up there.

You can reverse it, even. To turn dragons back on again, you just type "set mq106turnoffrandomdragons to 0" and you have random dragons again.

Okay, thank you, Vermilion Sparrow. Maybe there's a reason for me to go beyond The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller after all. Still, Can't help but wonder if this is intended by the developers.
They could at least accelerate the random Dragon encounters if player refused to cooperate with Delphine, until the player sees too much killing of innocents and finally come back to Delphine for help. The current plot is just another way around right now: Ignore Delphine = no Dragons, people happy, Help Delphine = more Dragons, people die.
