Will skyrim crash due to lack of video ram if i use these mo

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 2:35 am

So i got a 1gb ram video card.
I added the official hi-res pack, staticmesh, 4x MSAA, 8x AF, FXAA enabled, Shadows on Low, everything default to High, ENB sharpshooter.

Will skyrim crash with these mods?

Add: how to tell how much video ram is currently being used in an ATI card for skyrim

It wont crash, but it will slow down if the VRAM is maxing out. But I doubt that would be an issue since i run a card with ~860MB of VRAM (Granted having 16GB of system RAM couldnt hurt my case)

You don't have enough VRAM to run the official HD texture pack with 4xAA for it to run smoothly, There will be some pauses as the game loads into system ram & hard drive.
If anything, I would turn off the 4xAA & just use FXAA which will save you some VRAM.

On a 2Gb card with the same mods you use the average VRAM usage will be about 1.2-1.3Gb, Mine hits 1.5Gb usage in certain places.

Yes it's playable but not ideal & it will not crash your game, Slow it down almost certainly.

Many other factors come into play. E.g. at what resolution do you play ?

But at first glance, I think the high-res pack might become a problem for you.

I used to run Skyrim on a gtx260 with 896MB vram. No high-res texture pack, but 4xMSAA and 16xAF (more AF doesn't cost much). 1920x1200. A few mods (Water, Vurt's Flora). My vram was always bordering the max. The game played pretty smooth though.

Now I have a gtx680. 8xMSAA + 4xSSAA transparency. Using (very high) Ambient Occlusion (SSAO). High-res texture pack. And a few more mods. My vram usage is now 1.5-1.6GB. This makes me believe that your 1GB vram might not be enough use the high-res textures. But you should try it, that's better than trying to predict from our armchairs.

Also to take into account Your screen resolution will play a big part in the total Vram consumed.
