Will there be RPG elements in RAGE

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 8:27 pm

I know the game is still very much in the making, but I was wondering if theres any news as to whether or not there will be certain aspects such as: leveling up characters, customization of characters, tradingposts, upgradable armor, or even the ability to 'mingle' with the inhabitants of the towns? Honestly, Im the type of player that gets more out of RPGs then straight up shooters. I thought Borderlands was too much in the shooter category and did not possess enough of the RPG elements. For the money (and my preferences) I get more game time out of a game where there are multiple types of characters you can build, types of weapons to collect, etc; then just going through killing everything in each area, picking up a cool gun or two, and then moving on to the next area. There is just so little re-playability in that, again where Borderlands fall short. I guess Im just asking id to please avoid the mistakes borderlands made. Its more fun to exist in the environment than to just go around killing everything in it. Thats my two cents (or sense) feel free to poop on it :) :foodndrink:

In a preview I read today it was stated that there will be no classical RPG-elements like leveling up. But you can talk with NPCs and do certain sidequests for them. So there is more story than in previous id-titles. When the game progresses you will get better gear (but not with stats like in RPGs).

I like that idea too...rather than leveling up...progressing through story and acquiring everything. That way, you would be more focused on the story and the beautiful scenery than trying to get enough xp by killing 5 monsters or getting something for an N.P.C..

I dunno, I just find games where you go through and just kill everything is kinda boring and not worth a purchase (rather a rent). Half-Life 2: 1 play through..Call of Juarez: 1/2 a play through...borderlands 1 1/2 playthroughs. Just to name a few recent shooters. Oh MW 2, 1 play through (but great multi player). I mean emptying your clip into bazillions of mutants only carries you so far....until you need something for the game to go from a 7-8 to 9-10. :flamethrower: I love the graphics to Rage and I love the weaponry so far, but i reallllly hope RAGE takes a bigger bite.

Hopefully not. RPG elements get kind of boring. I'd rather just unlock new weapons, vehicles and maybe gear.

I agree with the OP here. I love getting emersed in games. Beth did so good with Morrowind and Oblivion (I have yet to play FO3) that I would hate to see all those graphics and a huge world go to waste on linear play.

i like interactivity with npcs and being able to make different choices that actually effect the world around you. i like increasingly better armor and weapons. i do NOT like being killed by a small bullet at the beginning of the game but barely being scratched at the end of the game simply because you have ten times the number of hit points. hit points are stupid mechanic and the only thing that should increase your resistance to damage should be the armor you wear. i dont mind improving stats although if they do it i hope they do it based on usage and not arbitrary numbers you get every level. morrowind and oblivion levelling is really good in that respect. your not going to be any good with swords if all you do is use bows all the time....it just makes sense. Id is know for shooters and i hope they keep their focus on that.

as for borderlands that is about as rpgish as a shooter can get. the only thing missing was ability stats but everything else was configurable such as weapons and special abilities........that game had it dead on in my mind.

As I understand it RAGE will be a post-apocalyptic thriller in the vein of Mad Max at Thunderdome. Your weapons, vehicle, and gear can be upgraded or new items purchased. Funding is through side quests or races. If you want to earn a level 9 accolyte that casts spells then you probably won't like RAGE. But, if you like a game that challenges your skills at driving and shooting as well as your strategic use of funds to invest into gear designed to make the use of those abilities that you are best at then you will probably like RAGE.

It's not fair to compare it to anything Bethesda's done. It's not an RPG and it's not developed by Bethesda.. id Software has made a living out of linear gameplay for over 15 years.

I think that an immersive, fully interactive game with a good story, choices and consequences and the ability to decide your character's actions to a considerable extent makes an RPG. Stats and levels are an unnecessary, but not necessarily bad extra.

While technically we play a role every time we play a game, this does not make all games rpgs. The genre is defined, and this isn't far enough down that road to be considered an rpg... but that doesn't mean that Id will make the game devoid of depth or intellectual stimuli... I expect this game to be graphically wonderful to enjoy and viscerally stimulating without the mental tax that comes with a traditional rpg (which I absolutely adore). It is very hard to say what this will ultimately be upon release, but I wouldn't try to scratch an rpg itch with a game like RAGE.

Hopefully it will be a pure shooting, ofcourse with talking with npc and stuff.

We have a already post apocalyptic rpg(Fallout) , so i would like to receive a post apocalyptic game with more "realistic" aspect and want to beat the game fully with my skills, rather than characters skill.

Weapon, armor and vehicle customisations are ofcourse welcome and preferred things to have add some spice to the game, but big no to skills.

Will people puh-lease stop talking about Borderlands as if it's RPG mechanics were anything more than a shallow gimmick thrown on top of the game! For [censored]s sakes, most games upgrade systems have more depth. And that's all Borderlands was too. Either arbitrarily throwing on more uses to your single skill, or increasing passive things. Or bonuses for killing things, essentially overpowered one person killstreaks.

And I loved Borderlands.

Meh, disagree. I didn't feel like the RPG mechanics of borderlands were any more slapped on than that of the Diablo games. I mean, obviously not the deepest RPG, but in me, it instilled that great sense of replayability, and that striving to get better, that only RPGs can.

But Borderlands was easily my favorite game of last year.

To me, Rage is looking more like Red Dead Redemption - there are opportunities to explore, do side missions, get new weapons or outfits along the way, but no RPG stats and leveling up.

And hey, Red Dead redemption is my favorite game so far this year.

I just realized I'm fairly excited for Rage. But, all this is speculation. Time will tell. But id always makes a good game.

So a bit like the STALKER games?

I would be very much down with a stable STALKER. One of the few things keeping me from playing it as much as I want.

though i spent many, many, MANY hours walking through the capital wastes, i couldn't help but think 2 things: graphically, fo3 could be waaay better, and the game was definatley more rpg than shooter. while i appreciate both good shooters and rpgs- i couldn't help but wonder how amazing a game like fo3 could be if it was as graphically strong as mw2, with the same quality 'shooting' physics. to me, that would be the perfect game- big, immersive world and storyline, more than acceptable graphics, and intuitive shooting physics. i thought i had stumbled upon that with RAGE, but from the way you guys are talking, its starting to sound like this is just another follow the path, run of the mill fps-is that what i'm to understand?

No one can answer that question. We can only speculate on what we have seen so far, which isn't much. We know it's an open world FPS, which rules out traditional RPG things like experience, levels, and character stats. It seems like there will probably be some RPG-like things such as dialog with townspeople, minigames, weapon/vehicle/gear upgrades. It doesn't seem like there will be much looting involved, but there should be a lot of exploring.

well that is true, but to the people (including me) who have beaten FO3 many times, and got like 1 1/2 playthroughs on New Vegas because the world svcked and you couldnt explore for [censored] and im betting that there have been a lot of them, we would very much like something new, with lots of RPG elements, im not asking for another Fallout, otherwise it would be immensley boring, im just wanting a good, intense shooter with lots of RPG elements too, becaouse ive really never encountered a game like that.
