Will Uncharted movie save video game movie industry?

"I do have some high hopes now that I know the story & casting are starting at square one(fingers crossed for Nathan Fillion as Drake). As long as there's a great story & the film doesn't lose too much of the game's influence, it could be the movie that turns around the idea of how to do a video game movie."-Todd Trent

Now keep that quote in mind and read the following

I Just saw this on facebook, and was reading through the comments. one guy actually made a good point.

Spoiler
"no. There will never be such a thing as a good video game film. They always kill the characters. They get the worst people possible for the films that don't fit the character at all. I mean just look at prince of persia. Decent action, but horrible acting. It's like the movie directors just read the game reviews, don't even play the game, and try to make a movie out of it. You need to play the game to figure out the character's personality. A great game has a hero with personality, and you will never know what the character is like unless you are playing through the game and learn the personality of the character. Take time to play the game hollywood. It might actually save you."

I think that is a valid point. It doesn't seem like movie producers actually take time to figure out the character's actual personality. It seems they just, as this guy pointed out, read the reviews and hope for the best.

On the other hand, the quote from Todd Trent says that the story and casting are starting from square one. I have no idea what that means, but I am hoping it means it will turn out that there will actually be some time taken to either play the game or have someone who played the game and tell them how to make the actors fit the characters better.

Still... I am under the impression that there will not be a stellar video game movie anytime soon. I can only hope that the Uncharted movie will prove me wrong.

Thoughts?

So...they may or may not cast it well and that's all we know? I see no reason to think it will turn out differently from any other videogame movie, on the basis of knowing nothing at all about it.

I'm sure there is more information, but I never take what any movie producer says and believe it right away. What you are saying is exactly my point. Even if they say they are taking extra time, doesn't mean it will actually be good. It could mean that! I mean taking extra time to do something better never hurts, but where do you draw the line on the extra time actually making the acting better? It could be that they waste all that extra time and lead themselves further away from actually hitting the characters spot on, and then the results will be the same = Another failed video game movie attempt.

Prince of Persia was as unconnected as it gets without being unrecognisable. Don't know what the quoted person was on.
That alone didn't stop it from being a flawed film, but is one of the better game adaptations.

I think that was what the quoted person was trying to say. I think the person was trying to say that the lasest one was still a flop even though it had better aspects to it. I agree the action was awesome in prince of persia and it was one of the better video game movies I've seen, but the actor they got for it was not at all what I was expecting. Also, I didn't know persians were British. I thought persians were.... well... persian.

I didn't find the characters to be bad for what is a basic fairy tale/fantasy action film. And it's Hollywood, getting a big cast of actually good and Middle-Eastern actors would have been an extremely time-consuming task. Also, the Persians in the games were not really that Persian-looking already. :P
