Windheml house.

I have a bit of a dilemma. I really want the Windhelm house and I have enough gold to buy it now with all the upgrades. I wanted to join the Stormcloaks anyway so that isn't an issue. I understand that you have to join them and complete some quests before buying it but here's my problem (I made a post about this earlier but can't find it).

First Whiterun is attacked. And the last quest, if I'm not mistaken is an attack on Solitude. I'm a bit worried that these two major hold will have long-term destruction done to them. Is this the case? Will there be destroyed building for the rest of the game after completing the Stormcloak questline? If so its not really worth it to me. I'd like all five major holds to be completely in tact.

For those that know, please tell me if Solitude and Whiterun go completely back to normal (other than the change in guards, literally).

No. Whiterun gets a bit destroyed and I think there's a house or two that becomes off-limits, and I'm not sure what they were beforehand, probably something to do with the Empire, but that's about it. Otherwise, Whiterun is as it always was. Solitude has only minor permanent damage. No buildings get destroyed and things go about as usual with that city after a couple of days.

Thanks. Even minor permanent damage might bother me. Like what kind of thing are you talking about? I just don't want destroyed houses in the middle of the city. Something I'll notice every time I come in. If its truly minor I guess it won't bother me. I really want that house in Windhelm, it has the most weapon racks and display cases.

Nothing major happens. I would like to make it clear though that you DO NOT have to join the Stormcloaks to get the Windhelm house. People keep saying this and it is incorrect. You can also do the Legion storyline and get Windhelm.

I'm not sure how it changes cosmetically for a Stormcloak run through since I joined the legion but, I do know that
Spoiler
Not much of a spoiler, but anyways: In the final quest for the Legion you attack Windhelm and I haven't noticed anything cosmetically different about it since after the attack
not sure if this applies to Solitude however.

In Solitude, all I've ever noticed is the well is destroyed, the one in the market area.

Whiterun is more noticeable, as the fencing area around the big tree gets destroyed, and I notice it every time I walk by to head to Jorrvaskr. I don't consider it major or anything, as it doesn't make the city look bad. Just a small reminder of the attack.
