MS Windows 8 rumours

Post » Tue Jul 12, 2011 1:08 pm

So was wondering what anyone thought of the latest rumor about http://www.insideris.com/more-xbox-360-games-on-windows-8-details/

I'd be pretty happy to do that - and it sounds feasible - not sure what it would mean for modding though? Or preventing leaderboard cheaters ?

I will send a $100 bill to MS if they do this.

No wait, I'll keep the $100, I'll need it for the subscription fee :celebration:

Prolonged hardware lifespan, hell yes.

I don't like that feature

... Should be noted I hate Windows 8 from a support standpoint, I do leave the consumer standpoint open for impression, but highly reserved against it... plus with the consumerization of IT, those two things aren't nearly as separate as it could be.

it would not mean any thing for modding, (I assume you mean getting mods on consoles) since the console you'll be playing these games is on the pc and not the 360 console itself... so you might as well just go with the PC for the mods to begin with.

So you have to buy (and use :yuck: ) Windows 8, as well as pay a subscription fee? It would probably be cheaper and more convenient just to buy a 360.

I'm guessing it would just be a fairly locked-down runtime environment for 360 games that runs on top of Windows. I guess that would be cool...one less thing in the entertainment cabinet in the living room since I already have a PC in there. No more sending away 360s for repair. I'm guessing it will be quite a while before I'm running Windows 8 on my HTPC, though.

I haven't seen enough solid info on Windows 8 to know if I like it or not yet. From a Windows development standpoint it sounds like it could improve some things (managed and un-managed libraries playing nicer together). On the other hand, I'm not a huge fan of the focus on touchscreen UIs...then again, they might just be playing up improved touchscreen support.

That feature is simply an over-glorified version of Games for Windows Live. That service already allows you to rack up achievements and such for the 360 (though 360 games and PC games each have their own separate achievement lists, even if they are the same game). The biggest difference now is that Microsoft wants you to pay for it.

I'd assume that this feature would only work on multiplatform titles available for both PC and 360. It's just not an easy accomplishment to just pop a 360 disc into a PC and expect it to work. It'll probably work something like Steamworks on PS3, where you can sync certain games between PS3 and PC while only having to buy one copy of the game. Such a system would be a good reason why Microsoft decided to keep Steamworks off of the Xbox.

Actually, the service described (Games for Windows Live) utilizes your current Xbox Live subscription. Meaning that you would only need one to play on both the 360 and the PC.

My complaint is that I can't currently be signed in on my PC and my 360 at the same time, nor does Games for Windows Live support party chat right now. <_<

So you can play single player games on W8 without paying?

It depends on how it works. From what it sounds like, they want to bring "Gold" services that you have to pay for, while the current service offers essentially the same thing as being a silver member on Xbox Live.

I would assume so, as you can currently. All the subscription would probably get you is access to multiplayer services.

This makes it sound like just having the ability to play 360 games will cost you money:

According to our sources, Xbox 360 on PC will have a subscription fee (just like Xbox Live).

It doesn't say anything about multiplayer in that statement.

No, but it says it will be just like Xbox Live, and all Xbox Live charges for is access to multiplayer (not counting services like Netflix, since those are basically just extra incentive).

It saying the fee is like Xbox Live, not the service. Though it's not really all that clear, to be honest.

It wouldn't surprise me. Consoles are becoming increasingly computer-like, and companies lose money per console sold that has to be made up through software sales. I'd think it would be expected that they'd start trying to combine them.
