Windows XP/Vista

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:10 am

I just finished reading http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9220849/Windows_7_is_on_a_slow_roll?taxonomyId=125 on business migration from XP to Windows 7. I'm currently in the process of migrating to Windows 7 at work too. I'm also migrating away from XP at home too. It made me a little curious about the rest of you guys. Windows XP is over ten years old now, and especially on the security front, really showing its age. I threw in Vista in there to see how that's trending, especially since Vista Basic/Premium/Ultimate supprt ends April of next year.

Anyway, my situation. At home there is currently 2 XP computers. I plan on having them off XP by the end of the year. There's no Vista Basic/Premium/Ultimate computers running at my home.

For work, as mentioned I'm currently migrating all PCs to Windows 7 Professional. The upgrade is slow because budget only permits me to do a few PCs at a time. The Windows Vista Home Premium PCs (date before my time) will be upgraded by February of 2012, before they reach EOL. We have 18 PCs at work. 8 currently are Windows 7, 7 currently are Windows XP, and 3 are Windows Vista. The vista count will be down to zero by February as mentioned. the XP count I'm hoping to get down to 3 by 2013. The last three are all legacy for some hardware without drivers. There's also two diagnostic devices that run XP. Nothing I can do about these (neither is networked or have USB ports, though) and they will probably be there for another 5 years.

My school's fully migrated all labs to Windows 7, no idea about the internal PCs, though, obviously.

I just switched from XP to Windows 7 since I just built my new computer. At school XP is still used though and that doesn't seem to change anytime soon.

EDIT: just reminded my self that my netbook is still running XP and I won't upgrade it. Don't think it could handle Vista or 7.

My old PC from a few years ago was XP, then I skipped a generation and got Windows 7 (new PC). My college still uses XP, which I wish I still had, but obviously I went Windows 7 way because of PC games -_-

Running Windows 7 here at home (although my sister's running Vista purely because she doesn't want to go through the time upgrading). My school is still using XP, and I don't see a chance for an upgrade ever... Silly school.

What's funny is that I remember in middle school (at the time, XP was freshly new), and the school computers still had Windows 98. Now with Windows 7, school computers have XP

You should tell your parents to reconsider. A month or two after Vista Basic/Premium/Ultimate hits EOL, it's going to have so many security holes it'll put swiss cheese to shame. Hope they at least turn on UAC, which might give it some small amount os saving grace from the [censored]storm.

Why do you wish you still had XP?

I stopped using XP when the Windows 7 RC was released, and I'm glad to be rid of it.

I guess it is just me, but mainly because it was easy to navigate with and it was simple.

I have had this PC for about a year and a half or two, and I am still learning my way around things with Windows 7.

I'm still using XP on my desktop. Probably won't switch until I'm forced to.

Haven't used XP for about 2 years now. I like Windows 7. Did have Vista for a while, but that was only on my mom's laptop. My work place uses Red Hat Linux. It's terrible, not because of the software though really, but because it's kinda outdated..we haven't upgraded from acrobat reader 5.0.

When I bought a new laptop last year I made sure I had the option of "upgrading" to XP.

I've used Vista and several flavours of Windows 7, have fixed PC's using them as well (my wife has a Laptop with Windows 7, laptop with win XP, and desktop with Vista), and I still have yet to see a reason to bother with either Vista (the worst Windows OS next to ME) or Windows 7 -- both my desktop and laptop use XP. I will take a look at the next Windows version (Windows 8 or w/e it will be called) and see if I have enough incentive to switch. It took me ages to switch away from Windows 98 and 2K, I'm in no rush to jump to the newest OS's. Takes a bit more convincing.

My desktop is Win7, my laptop is Vista, and I'm not paying to upgrade that ageing machine. I mostly only use it for image editing and web browsing anyway.

I don't have high hopes at all for Windows 8. It's a shame in a way, since some features (File History) are very nice. For that reason, Windows 7 I see as pretty imperative given that only Windows 7 and Windows Vista Business will not EOL before Windows 9. Microsoft's decision to combine tablet and desktop and be so incredibly touch-centric is a major turn-off for me when it comes to a desktop OS.

I couldn't imagine doing anything with a network connection on an EOL'd Windows (I do have a non-networked Win2k VM just for messing around with but it has no way of communicating with anything outside the vm), especially XP since it doesn't have the added protection of ASLR or UAC. If Windows XP stays relatively popular after its EOL, it's going to be a malware writer's best friend. Every vulnerability will remain a gaping hole because MS won't patch them. Then other things will drop XP support increasing the number of vulnerabilities.

My desktop is Win7, my laptop is Vista, and I'm not paying to upgrade that ageing machine. I mostly only use it for image editing and web browsing anyway.

"upgrade" by completely replacing it. Win2k has shown us how viable malware writers consider EOL Windows. Only way to use EOL Windows computers is non-networked and with autorun disabled.

Switch from XP to 7 last year out of curiosity. It was clean transition. I still use XP via Virtual PC for my printer and some program.

My college and workplace still uses XP.

Three computers used for different applications and compatability needs.

XP, Vista and Win 95 no intention on changing any of them.

Switched from XP when Vista SP1 was released. would have done the same with 7 but the death of a motherboard actually gave me an excuse to upgrade early.

No idea what the plans at work are XP at the moment. I certainly recall they were still using NT 4.0 when I started, around a year after it's support was completely withdrawn.

Using Win7 on my desktop and Ubuntu on my laptop.

Mah University just switched to Windows 7 over the summer. I'm pretty sure all the computer labs got upgraded. I've been in four labs and they all had 7.

I run Windows 7, and will be getting Windows 8 shortly after release. My parents still use XP, and most of the computers at the college I attend use Windows 7. Although for some weird reason they insist on using the original Windows desktop theme rather than Aero.
