Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 6:14 pm

And I just DL'd a bunch of crap that needs unzipped...

Thi sis a good one or WinRAR hasa trial if you want another trial version of a program. 7Zip also has some of the best compression you can find.

7Zip or WinRar are free (technically the trial is free but I installed the trial years ago and it's still fully functional ).

I pretty much only use 7Zip. It's not perfect, but it's great for being free and supports lots of different compression formats.

WinRAR you can use past the evaluation date and it extracts pretty much everything. I haven't used WinZip for years...

Though .zip files Windows can extract without any programs.

winrar does a free trial, mine still works even after expireing for some reason.

as for Winzip? I know of no legitimate ways of obtaining it for free.

lol. thats silly, I'll never buy it if the only consequence I have to deal with is a close-able nag-window...

...I hope they don't read this and change their policy.

For as long as I've used WinRAR (~8 years) I've never had any kind of popup or anything to nag me, not sure why . It may be because I just save all compressed files to my desktop and use the right-click context window to extract them.

Yup, you won't be nagged so long as you only use the context menu and DON'T use the options that open the archive window. It's only when WinRAR's archive window is displayed that it'll nag you.

That said, I'm more for 7-zip these days.

What I don't understand is why applications for unzipping isn't a standard thing that comes preloaded in computers, yea I know windows kinda does but it svcks and I find that it usually won't do what I want.

idk, I just thinks its rediculous how much they want you to pay for the programs, its literally taking my files hostage :o

zip is. Rar isn't because Rar is a proprietary format. 7z isn't because it's not popular enough would be my guess.

7z doesn't have a lot of recovery contingency and isn't used for backup/recovery so it's not likely to ever catch on as an industry standard.

http://www.oldversion.com/WinZip.html

I've used WinZip for YEARS. If the latest version is locking out after X days/uses, just download an older version. I doubt it's improved enough to need the latest version.

Lots of other good utilities on that site if you don't might slightly old school versions of the package.

a winzip trial version (a newer one i think) ends after 50 days but you can just uninstall it and if you keep the exe you can install it again

WinRAR is free anyway, I think the 30 day trial resets whenever you close it

Between 7-Zip and http://legroom.net/software/uniextract one doesn't need any other compression programs.

If you are only unzipping things, then you don't need any 3rd party program as modern Operating Systems have built in decompression for .zip

This.
Been using a trial version of WinRAR for years and years. Tempted to give 7z a try after reading all the comments though. Is it noticably better/different or just a matter of opinion?

It has the best compression out of any programs. I also prefer it to the alternatives. I say download it and give it a try, doesn't hurt anything.

I believe I read a comparison that concluded 7zip actually being superior.

For compression? 99% of the time I'm only extracting files, and I like the WinRAR interface better (although I usually use the context menu).
