I wish dungeons weren't so linear.

Every dungeon is the same thing: you walk in a linear path killing everything you see - which is very fun, don't get me wrong - and then end up back where you started.

I wish dungeons were more labyrinthine. I wish there were multiple pathways, you could get lost, you had dead ends, etc. I love dungeon crawling in Skyrim, but this is one thing I think that would make it better.

Thoughts?

I think there's a potential problem whereby they can alienate players if they keep getting lost and spend ages wandering round a cramped space just wanting to find the way out.

That said I think they should mix it up a bit more. And have more hidden bits you might not notice. Like there's that one with spiders in that has a less than totally obvious button that opens a door to a vampire nest.

I wish the radiant quest system was somehow scripted not to send back to dungeons you've already been to. Twice I've had Meridia's beacon located in dungeons I've already cleared. So it's either trudging back through an empty dungeon or it's repopulated exactly how it was before with everything a bunch of levels below my character.

I do wish they would harken back to the Daggerfall style dungeons. Even if we would lose a little aesthetics, like flatter walls instead of rock outcroppings, I would love the creepy feeling of hearing monsters scuttle behind walls and hearing them open creaky doors somewhere out of sight. Plus the long, windy hallways opening up into chasms were always fun.

Agreed, I used to get the real sense that I could get lost in them.

Hi there Skooma Addict! Hope you're having a great day.

Wholeheartedly agree. Linearity, predictability and excessve repetitiveness all plague Skyrim dungeons. They might be an improvement, coming from Oblivion, but to a newcomer like myself they nevertheless suffer from these pesky flaws conspicuously. Bethesda needs to step up its game in this department.

Play Legends of Grimrock, you'll love it.

As for the topic I do feel that way when exploring nordic ruins but less so than forts/dwemer ruins. Mods do spice it up a bit but I would agree that most would get frustrated running around looking for an exit. The puzzles on the other hand could of been a little harder to give that sense of achievement.

Played it, didn't love it.

And Daggerfall style dungeons are very much on topic as they are not linear and most (except for some that involve the main quest) are random as well as HUGE. Some of the best dungeons in PC RPG history.

Hopefully one day randomized dungeons will be done right by someone, because i think that's the way to go every new game gives you new dungeons.
so far every game I've seen with randomized dungeons have been as boring as the developer made ones.

Thanks, I am having a great day and I hope you are also.

Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Skyrim's dungeons and dungeon crawling. I think Skyrim has the best dungeons yet - in spite of the linearity. Morrowind had some dungeons that were just as good, and some of them were very complex, with multiple ways to get through it. I wish we could get the best of both worlds.

Either way, Bethesda did an outstanding job, but if you are reading this, Beth, please give us non-linear dungeons in future expansions.

I don't find Skyrim's dungeons boring at all. I actually get the "awe" moments that I get on the surface world in them. I just wish they weren't so "accessible" - in other words, dumbed down.

I do, too, at times. Unfortunately, after going through dungeon after dungeon, they all start to feel the same for me and I get bored with them.

The probably with random dungeons, though, is that there's really no way they could achieve the same level of detail in a random dungeon and they'd ultimately become very generic.

I would like this. I remember playing Oblivion once and I went into this Oblivion gate and it was different to any other gates I'd ever been in. It had this tunnel full of holes that you could fall down and it was a huge maze. If you found an exit it would lead you to another area. I was so lost and spent hours and hours trying to figure my way out.

I eventually got out but I was just so lost it wasn't funny, but it sure was fun. Maybe not for everyone though haha.
