With all the Shortfalls? Still the Best Game Ever!

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:32 am

I know, I know!
We have Curve Balls, Cosmic Rays, Faulty Weapons, Bursts of adrenalin around corpses, locked keymaps, Immortal souls, saved game denials, and sometimes a Sauna (Steam) when we did'nt ask for one.

But Hey.
We have a game so good it reaches past our Mental Schema (where we have control) to our Emotional Schema (in which we dont--) and Cognitive Dissonance (read: the conflict between what we think & what we feel) occurs due to errors in the code. We love this game so much it makes us downright ornery. I am Passionate - Oh yeah. I have never said '...Awesome." so much in my my life in so short a timespan. My nickname at work now is 'The American' - and I live in South Australia.
I'm new to the Internet (2 months), with Irony just in time to field the Game and be able to work it properly. When Steam dug its claws into my Hard drive I did the same as a lot of you out there- I became delicately predisposed. Like somebody leaving their phone at home (or even losing it), I went through the seven stages of Grief in regard to the matter. There was Denial, there was anger, there was resentment and a couple of others I can't quite remember. But the final stage is acceptance, and I have, because the code field I'm running around in at the moment quite simply defines all of my spare time. And then I met all of you in the Forums. Awesome! So many valid opinions, both considered and appropriate: if you are reading this I doff my cap.
How good is the game? It puts F3 to shame! I thought I was a gamer (PC: DOS Jockey: Amulet of Yendor days) but I'm slipping on the combinations and permutations regarding the scale of New Vegas. Caravan? Can't even work out the keys! The reloading bench? Can only recycle. The workbench? No bloody Idea! This game looks to me as having another Magnitude of replayabilty compared to F3 (which I currently scale at hundreds of hours - just add a zero). Am I a NOOB? Only to the Internet. I'm 94% of 40 years of Age and still can't Grok the scale of this Game.
Life Itself only allows us one run through, confined by the strictures of linear time. In FNV we transcend this linearity and get to work the lines of Digital Fate like the Gods of the Hard Drive we are.
The more fickle would say we are playing in a Digital Sandbox.
Students of Phenomenology are linving the dream they could never find in their day to day machinations.
All I can say is: What a Bloody Sandbox! Consider me Officially Entertained! I am entertained now ond well into the future.

I agree, this game is pretty awesome. It could have been one of the best games either but a few minor problems keep it from there. Unique encounters, glitches, allies, no playthrough after the main quest, and a few others really disappoint me..

You right. The best ever games are the ones you can break at your own speed and in your own time. I had the counterdude at EB Games in Sth Australia tell me that standalone buy-the-code-and-own-it games are swiftly becoming a thing of the past. Apparently it is not just the manual they want to get rid of. It's the bax and the DVD too.
Whoops! Were you inferring there was a more convoluted, more involved, and more complex game out there? I'm biased to the Sci-Fi genre myself, and am happy to consider a second opinion on whats' down in the gaming world. Thanks for listening.

I plan on heading to Brisbane sometime in the future. Maybe I'll take the four hour drive down to the south coast.

A: you have mail.
B: Save the petrol. Adelaide is a few klicks further than you think!
C: Catch you on the Binary Highway.

In all honesty Oblivion blows this game out of the water but still New Vegas is fun as hell to play. Nothing is more satisfying then headshotting a Deathclaw the stupid (Censored) deserves it everytime.

Zydecowash... You sir have written so eloquently, you have thus inspired me to make a board account just to say to you, that I wish someday in some form of life, that I can master the english language as well as you have.

Cheers to you... and no. I don't own this game yet... but as soon as I get past a goal at work, my reward is to buy this game so I may sink into gaming oblivion. Hopefully that is this weekend.

I agree it's an awesome game, but the best ever title would definitely go to metal gear solid 4 and then to dragon age and warcraft 3

Best game ever is Tribes 2 and I will defend it to my death bed. Multiplayer at its best and I'm telling you right now that if servers were still up I'd STILL be playing it more than anything else.

Game of the 2010 as far as I am concern is still Mass Effect 2 along with pretty much all of their DLC. Nothing came close this year.

I would place FNV second or third.

It is where we find inspiration that we find ourselves at our best. The writer Colin Wilson talks about 'Peak Experience': with stories where teenagers find the strength to lift utility vehicles off of partially crushed parents and such. He (Wilson) talks about inspiration and being able to channel this energy by learning how to recognize the increments in which 'Peak Experience' comes. Though sounding like a Kuh-rackpot at the moment I admit I find a 'Peak Experience' increment in FNV. A preset system in which one can work a multitude of angles without recourse to actual Reality. Sure it involves the 'Min/Maxing' of Dungeons and Dragons, but it is the Malice Aforethought that binds me to the Code. Roleplaying with humans involves too much Pizza- (yeah, I like Anchovies. Let's roll to see if we get'em!)
On reading some of the other messages we get thought varigated Subjects in FNV, I see see how 2-D I think in the shadow of F3. People are branching out, diversifying, taking risks. Me? Hedging bets, playing safe, stereotyping myself, being consistent.
I'm gathering the cahones to do something different. Though I feel vertigo despite the fact there is no actual personal risk to me (go computers!), this is where I find my inspiration in a reality where risk normally is associated with pain and the occasional cessation of life.
