PC woes

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:50 am

K, so I tried posting in the designated PC spec thread but got ignored. No biggy, but I didn't want to spam the thread with my issues, so I thought Id just make a thread instead.

Original post-
My laptop is a few years old, it has the GeForce GT 330M card and can run most games fine with including Crysis at mid-high level settings minor FPS issues.
Other specs are-
Intel Core i7 CPU M 620 2.67GHz (4 CPUs) ~2.7GH
Available OS Memory: 3.9gb RAM

Id really like to upgrade for Skyrim so I can get the most out of it. But seeing as I know next to nothing about upgrading laptops, I'm unsure what cards or other relevant hardware I'm able/should upgrade (why I hate dealing with laptops)

What card/other would you guys recommend for my system?

So what do you guys think? What in my system needs addressing, and how may I go about addressing them? Is upgrading it myself and option with laptops (mine in particular)?

I dont mind if this thread gets banned shortly, I just need some quick advise.

There is an official http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1244249-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-skyrim-discussion-35/ for these types of questions, and your personal queries do not merit their own thread.

I'd probably just get a 360. That's just about how much upgrading some components would be. Not sure you can put a different GPU since you havent said what kind of laptop it is

None. It can manage the lowest setting, but I find it causes too much FPS lagg.

Like I said, I'm okay with this going under the dirt I just need some advise. I posted in the thread you linked and got no reply. I dont feel like pissing on about my query so I thought this would be the quickest way to get some solid feedback.

And I'm being serious.

I say the same thing all the time, but I'm afraid I dont have the funds at present to build a tower.

I'm willing to make an exception to my own advise this once in anticipation for Skyrim. I'm looking to make some minor upgrades to my laptop so I can get the most out of Skyrim when its released.

Yeah, I say to not bother because 99% of laptops are not able to be upgraded. And if they can, its very very limited or its a custom laptop, and if it were the latter, you wouldn't be here asking. Any kind up laptop upgrade would be extremely expensive.

If you are looking to "get the most" then you need to get a tower cus they can be upgraded for relativly cheap over time.

Understandable. Thats what I suspected anyway, thanks for clearing that up.

QQ, what about my Card? Would that be worth looking at getting upgraded? Or is that a dead end concerning laptops as well.

As i said, 99% of the time, you cant upgrade a laptop. Aside from RAM and hard drives, but that wont really effect anything.

Laptops are not made for gaming. Even gaming laptops are not recommended for gaming. Price for performance is far better for a desktop.

There are three "upgrades" that can be done to a laptop to improve performance

1. Upgrade to an SSD

2. Upgrade the RAM (in your case, to 8 GB)

3. Upgrade the OS (to 64-bit if not already -- necessary to address 8 GB, to Windows 7 if not already, otherwise doing a clean install of Windows will improve the performance by getting rid off all the junk that you can't get to and naturally forms over the course of running Windows)

YMMV with these upgrades, but there will be some improvements. The exact amount cannot be said, and the best improvements (SSD, Windows 7 64-bit) are quite expensive.

Kind of what I was afraid of, so not totally unexpected.

I'm running win7 32 bit, however I was able to address the available RAM issue, and can now make full use of my 4gb of ram. Which in the end, doesn't change much by itself.

I would recommend doing a little research before using though, even if it is pretty simple. Just generally a good idea to be aware of what your going to do to your system before hand, and not just trust one guy on the internet (me) to steer you straight.
