Won't start New Vegas : Fallout: New Vegas

Yesterday I bought New Vegas on Steam, and it installed without a hitch, but after launching it from Steam and clicking 'Play' from the launcher, an error appears with the message "Failed to initialize renderer. Hardware T&L required but not supported by Adapter". Can anyone help with this?

That's because you don't have a real video card....just a very poor integrated chipset from Intel that is just not meant for games. The "Failed to initialize renderer. Hardware T&L required but not supported by Adapter" message is very much related to this lacking chipset as well. Because this game somewhat lowered the min requirements so the some of the Intel Chipsets work, you might try updating the drivers for it. However, your performance will still surely be poor.

Now since this is a desktop, the best option is to upgrade get a real video card. However your dxdiag doesn't show much in terms of the make/model of the PC. Have that info? Would like to check if there's an PCI-E expansion slot for a video card and would also like to check what wattage PSU it has (likely some generic 300W unit).

AND if you have a budget you'd like to spend for upgrades, now is the time to state it.

The minimum graphics to play this game is a CARD made by AMD or nVIDIA. Intel doesn't make cards at all and can't handle 3D games with its chipset video chip versions of graphics.

FX 5200 is far too old and weak to run the game. PCI-Express Interface indication doesn't say much....I realize that the chipset supports that interface, but it doesn't mean that you physically have it on your motherboard. Nor does it indicate that you PC case is a normal one and not some slim-line skinny one.

Damn. I have seen, however, things being attached to the motherboard and I am sure that I could do it, but as you said it may not be physically on it. Even if it doesn't, what kind of card would you recommend for a fairly cheap price? I am seeing an 8400 card at about $30, would that be suitable?

Among elderly Geforces and all Radeons since Oblivion was new, a "600" is what is wanted, not a "400". The 8400 is a terrible thing, no better at all than the Intel video chips. An FX is worse than the Intel video chips, at least that one would be, but it won't fit anyway. It would be "AGP" for very old PCs. The minimum Geforce for games these days is a "50" (or a "40" from the GT200 generation).

Your rig seems to be a home build, thus no manufacturer's labels. The intel video chipset is on the motherboard but if you open her up and see a PCI-e slot then you can easily insert an actual video card. As stated above don't waste your time with an FX, go for a GTX (even a 200 series will work on low/medium settings). Then you will probably have to disable the on-board video in BIOS during boot-up. Don't forget to load the latest driver for whatever video card you get before booting up with the new card. (Windows will automatically load a default driver but the manufacturer's is best.)

[If the MB only has an AGP slot (Google it for pictures and explanations) they are still available online for a fair price (under $100) even though they are obsolete.]
