I wonder if the co-op missions can be played immediately : Othor Games

I have a buddy coming to my place on Oct. 4th to play RAGE with me and I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna have to play though the story in order to play the co-op missions. If that's the case... Crap. Anybody have an idea?

AFAIK, there will be some background lore that attaches the co-op to the main game, but the events dont effect eachother in game.
