Started playing last night, and I'm not very far into the main story - at least, I wasn't. I got sidetracked with the whole "Find a Sheriff" side-quest, then decided that was boring and that I'd make my way to New Vegas for some fun. I was not expecting to run into masses of Deathclaws along the way - perhaps that was a sign I wasn't supposed to be this far north at this point in the game. But, of course, I found a way around them and snuck through the hills toward The Strip. Took me quite awhile to figure out how to get into the town, and once I did I was confronted with some potentially big spoilers about the robot that finds you at the start of the game (forgot his name) and Mr. House. Did I accidentally skip a big part of the story here? Or just a small part, or none at all? The game seems to assume that I know the name of my assaulter at this point, something which I hadn't found out yet. (The part of the main storyline quest I'm on is still wanting me to ask around about him.) Could this ruin my game experience, would it be best for me to start over or at least go back and continue the story from the proper point, or would there be little harm in just continuing from here?
