Works on Vista, doesn't work on Win7

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:29 am

I have about 84 hours of mostly successful NV play on my Vista installation (32-bit); some random crashing, but generally it ran ok.

Yesterday, I bought a new hard drive and Win7 (64-bit). Did a fresh install of Win7 (64-bit) on the new drive, all updates from MS installed, MSE installed, latest nVidia drivers installed, then installed Steam and then NV from Steam. I left the old hard drive unplugged, otherwise all hardware is the same as it was on my Vista (32-bit) installation. The first time I tried to run NV, it properly detected my video card, and presented the "launcher" screen. I hear the launcher screen music, I can look at the options, etc, but when I click on "Play", the launcher screen goes away, but NV never starts. Once in awhile after I click "Play", win7 pops up an APPCRASH with this info:

Problem signature: Problem Event Name:	APPCRASH Application Name:	FalloutNVLauncher.exe Application Version:	1.2.14.0 Application Timestamp:	4cc0aa7d Fault Module Name:	GameOverlayRenderer.dll Fault Module Version:	0.97.30.46 Fault Module Timestamp:	4ce1b8a2 Exception Code:	c0000005 Exception Offset:	00012923 OS Version:	6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID:	1033 Additional Information 1:	0a9e Additional Information 2:	0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789 Additional Information 3:	0a9e Additional Information 4:	0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789...

But most of the time, it just silently fails. Is there some log I can look at or debug I can turn on to try to diagnose this? Here's my DxDiag:

Might not help at all, but when I had MSE installed on my WIN 7 64 bit the launcher would sometimes not work correctly, i uninstalled it and its been flawless.

Again take with a grain of salt but get rid of MSE and see if that helps

Your issue can't be blamed solely on Win7. I've never played NV on anything other than Win7u64 and I've never had a crash. Annoying video anomalies and poor performance, yes, but these were corrected by driver updates, game patches and a hardware upgrade.

I am having the same issues. I played Fallout 3 just fine on my machine with Windows Vista 32-bit and then got a new hard drive and upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit. Fallout: New Vegas does not work at all and Fallout 3 also does not work (http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1153169-new-game-crash/page__view__findpost__p__16895204).

I'll be doing some more stuff, like upgrading the video drivers again, but the last time I tried that, it just made matters worse! However, I CAN say that Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are the only games I've had issues with so far on this computer with Windows 7 64-bit... So it's certainly specific to them.

I've since installed Crysis (from Steam) and Starcraft II, both work fine. Would love to get NV working, so if anyone can give me some tips on diagnosing the problem. I don't get anything from windows, I click "Play" from the launcher, and it disappears, but the game never starts. If others on win7 64-bit are having success, it's just a matter of getting some diagnostics to narrow to the problem. Hard to debug when "it just disappears" with no error message. Is there a way to turn on debug logging or something?

Though you shouldn't have to, try running the game in compatibility mode.

Right click the FalloutNV.exe>Troubleshoot compatibility>(tick)first option>(Select)Vista or XP.

Mine just runs without this but maybe it will at least get you into the game.

Good luck.

Compatibility mode doesn't make any difference. Neither does the d3d9.dll workaround (that I've tried so far anyway, I've tried two of them). I've also tried the trick of making the initial video not load, but that just means that it doesn't play the video and then crashes faster ;-)

Compatibility mode doesn't make any difference. Neither does the d3d9.dll workaround (that I've tried so far anyway, I've tried two of them). I've also tried the trick of making the initial video not load, but that just means that it doesn't play the video and then crashes faster ;-)

I'm not even getting to the point where the "new game", etc. screen comes up. Crashes as soon as I click "Play" on the Launcher. Compatibility mode complains about missing dll. Bah, if I could just get a damn error message to go on!

Have you checked your event logs?

But most of the time, it just silently fails. Is there some log I can look at or debug I can turn on to try to diagnose this? Here's my DxDiag:

If you go into Control panel/Administrative Tools/ Event Viewer there where your logs are. Look at you left column you see Custom views, Windows log, App and service logs and Subscription. Click Windows logs and App and service log you should find your problem there.

I have W7-Pro 64bit it runs this game nicely. I have a 11 year old game "Citizen Kabuto: Giants" and it runs the game very nicely. The game I have problems with is Dirt. It will not run. It has a Application hang. Grid works.

There are a couple different failure modes now:

1) Click Play in launcher, launcher goes away, nothing happens. Nothing shows up in the Event Logs. No Fallout processes exist.

2) Click Play in launcher, launcher music stops, launcher stays open but hangs (busy circle pointer). After a minute, if I click in the launcher again, I get a notice from Windows that the app is unresponsive, and an entry in the Event Log saying that FalloutNVLauncher.exe had an AppHangB1 event.

There's another one where an APPCRASH event shows up in the log, but it hasn't happened in awhile, so I can't remember the exact details. I've rebooted to try to get that one again, but it's just 1 or 2 above now.

Thanks for the helpful tips everyone, lemme know if you have any other ideas. Not sure how much more of my life I want to waste trying to get this game to work. Is there some way to log a ticket with gamesas? Guess I can try emailing them.

Ah, just remembered, that one happens when I check the "enable steam in-game" box. Then I get the APPCRASH for FalloutNVLauncher.exe with Fault Module Name of GameOverlayRenderer.dll. Bummer.

Well, decided to wipe my whole win7 install since I hadn't done much else with it, and try all over again. The only thing I did different was to not install the EVGA nVidia drivers, and just use the drivers that the Windows Updates installed. I played for a couple hours, so I'm hoping things are all good now. Didn't have to do anything else special that I can think of. I didn't even have to disable the Steam overlay. Posting this in case it helps someone else...
