Is world of warcraft a good game? Is it it worth the money?

Post » Fri Aug 12, 2011 5:35 pm

Hello all,
I've never really played any MMo's, and I'm just curious as to all of your alls opinions on the game World of Warcraft.
Is it good? Is it worth the cash? Is the gameplay fun and complex? Repetitive? Is the pvp good? Is the pve good?
Thanks,

I think it's free to play up to level 20, so you should just try it for yourself. I played it a lot and enjoyed parts of it, but would never play it again .... but I also dont regret buying it ... so yeah not much of an answer there lol. Just try the free version for awhile and see what you think.

It is, but a lot of features are restricted. You can't chat on public channels, use the auction house, send mail, or PM people who don't have you on their friends list for instance.

To the OP: Yeah, it's good. I'd recommend having a friend or two to play with though. The community on certain servers is pretty.... horrible.

Last bit of advice: Stay the [censored] out of trade chat. It's for your own good.

15 bucks a month for constant updates and the works. I say it's worth it for a month to try it out.

From my experience, trade chat on Horde was pretty cool. Trade chat on Alliance was full of idiots asking stupid questions.

Both trade chats are identical in my experience being both on Horde and Alliance on the same server.

I hear the forums are a great way to get a keylogger :P

I played a bit of it once with a friend. It was fun, but not enough for me to pay the subscription, plus I just plain don't have the time for it.

Nah, ever since the move to the new forums, they've really clamped down on that kind of thing. I don't go there very often anymore, but on the very rare occasion I did see a keylogger link it was quickly removed.

They're almost always pretty obvious too. Just don't click any random tinyurl links with very bad english in the post and you'll be fine.

Also, dont reply to any e-mails that seem to be from Blizzard/Battlenet that claim there is a problem with your acount, I know a few people who've had accounts hacked that way.

Does your server have an even amount of each faction? My server was a 2:1 Alliance-to-Horde PvE server, so was probably full of newbs on the Alliance side. The Horde chat was a lot faster too, even though there were less people.

Will definitely come in handy. I never click Tinyurl links, because I don't know where they link to.

You'll get a thousand different answers from a thousand different people :D
I'd pick up mining and skinning as your two trade skills as soon as you can though. I made more gold through mining than I did selling off loot, even rares. Equipment is big in WoW (maybe not at the lower levels), but with mining alone I could go to the auction house every few levels and buy new gear and still have hundreds and later on thousands of gold left over. Once you start getting gold from mining you can drop skinning for something more fun and with the gold you should have left over from mining you can buy most of the materials to quickly raise the new skill. Maybe once a week I'd devote about an hour or so to mining (dont try this on the weekends or when school is out), but for the most part I just mined when I ran across a mining node in my travels.

I know my old server was uneven with probably the same ratio as yours. Alli seemed pretty knowledgeable.

Also to op, if you want to PvP, don't try and base it off low level pvp through bgs. It's a terrible place for new people.

This.

Also, if you plan on PVPing, try to use hotkeys rather than clicking your abilities from the hotbar. You can rebind them however you like from the options, and if you do that you'll find that you're able to be a lot more mobile in PVP, something that's very important.

That's effective, but kinda boring for new players. I used a DK alt for making money, because crafting is more fun.

The PvP can be a lot of fun, though only really at the highest level. As it is right now, PvP at lower levels is extremly unbalanced due to a combination of factors that Blizzard can't be bothered to address, and will probably give a lot of first timers a very bad first impression of what PvP is like in the game.

I remember PvPing in the early days of WoW around the 10-19 levels. It was a lot of fun, every class was more or less equally crap around those levels, there were tight-knit dedicated battleground communities, and it was all about good teamwork.

You might as well sell your legs to help pay for the subscription, you won't be needing them any more any way.

Also, dont reply to any e-mails that seem to be from Blizzard/Battlenet that claim there is a problem with your acount, I know a few people who've had accounts hacked that way.

Yup the community on certain servers is a bit lacking and things can get quite bad. Personally I found WoW to be alright however it's really just a hyped up game tbh and with SWTOR coming out shortly or atleast I hope shortly most people will bolt from WoW. At the moment they're just pushing out the same old stuff in WoW trying to "Grab Attention" as it were. Also as another person mentioned WoW is F2P up to level 20 now in order to grab more people out there.

I want to play it kind of, but I don't want to spend $80 on expansions if I'm not gonna play it at all. I also don't want to play it if I have to dedicate my time just to it, can I play it 1-2 hours a day and still experience the game?

As a current and long time WoW player i'd like to say that before you begin playing, should you choose to do so, that you take into account a couple of things.

World of warcraft is unlike many other games, it is addictive in the extreme, it is highly polished and immense fun, but before you begin to play ask yourself a few questions.

1. do you have lots of time that you wish to spend playing the game? wow demands many hours of playtime and very often gets them because of it's addictive nature, if the answer here is "No" then i would consider not playing it, because many people have begun playing the game promising themselves that they will only play an hour a day, and soon find that amount shooting upwards and consuming vast amounts of their time.

2.this is linked somewhat to first question, but do you have any members of family, friends or fiancee that would be unhappy with you spending large amounts of time playing a computer game? if answer is "yes" again i would consider not playing the game, it can get in the way of relationships and leave you ignoring important duties.

3. do you have an addictive personality? if you do, it is highly likely you will become addicted to wow, that may be a good or bad thing depending on your life circumstances, but you should take that into consideration.

Ok to sum up, wow is a lot more than a game, it is a social phenomenon too, for some people it has been a wonderful experience, if they are ill at home and unable to partake in society at large for whatever reason, then it has been a source of great happiness and combatted loneliness, but if you already have a full life that demands a lot of your time, it could be a bad decision for you to play it.

It's all about time, do you have the time? is it time you want to spend on a game instead of other activites? thats the main thing to remember, WoW will take up huge amounts of your time once you begin to play, if you are not very careful and strict on yourself.

In my experience, yes it's a good game. However it's not worth the money past a point. See it takes about 7 days ingame time to reach max level, and unless you're at your keyboard 24/7 for a week this isn't going to happen very quickly. It takes a good two to three months to reach the endgame content, and this is with playing religiously and knowing exactly what you're doing. For a game where everybody says the "fun part" is at the endgame I can't justify the time cost.

I don't want to play a boring repetitive grindfest for three months just so I can "get to the good parts" at the end.
